Most of the cats you see are no particular breed. Trust me, a purebred cat is just as expensive as a purebred dog. And as long as it doesn't get labeled a "designer breed", any mutt is as cheap as a "mutt" cat.
It's just that cats breed more often than dogs (they are induced ovulators) so you get a lot more mixed breed cats that people give away to pet shops who sell them for $50 for a small profit.

Here the cost of a dog at the humane society is far higher than cats, which it didn't used to be, but they had to put it up. We've got a very large Hmong/Asian population here and they thought nothing of going to the animal shelter to 'adopt' a large dog, then killing and eating it for supper. Dog is eaten in Asia and it wasn't anything weird to the culture there, but it made a HUGE stink here when people found out about it. The cost of dogs jumped up over $100 and the paperwork for adoption was changed to make sure that no pets were going to be food items, if adopted out.

As for breeders charging what they do--it's what the market will bear. If nobody paid high prices for a dog then the prices would come down.

Dog's are more protective, but can require more work. Both shed, both eat, both can be affectionate. A cat can use a box inside and can stay alone with an adequate food supply overnight. A dog might tear things apart while you are gone. Then again so could a young cat. A dog would stay in a fence. A cat would not necessarily. Dogs maybe travel better. Depends on your situation. I have had both. The cat was less work, but our dog once saved our life. Loved them both.

Have you ever bought a purebred cat then you will realize that they are not "cheap as dirt" and the same goes for dogs at least if you are buying from a reputable breeder not a kitten mill.

Its according to what breed of cats. Some breeds are really expensive. I have a Bengal cat. It wasn't`t not cheap. Go look at cat breeds. They`re like dogs pay for what your getting.

Who says cats are cheap? I paid $150 for my first (an adoption from a local shelter) and $75 for the second (an adoption from our vet)! Neither is a purebred cat, just your common domestic short hairs. In addition to that I have paid several hundred (in the year and a half I have owned them) towards food, vet bills, toys, etc. If you take care of an animal properly, give it the proper care etc, no matter what animal it is, it is not cheap.

Good question....but then again, where I'm from there are some pretty expensive cats and some really cheap dogs. I guess it's just based on where you're located.
