If you are worried about your weight, then to a very high degree, you should weigh as much as you feel happy with weighing.

As long as you are at a weight where you are healthy, the most important part is that you are HAPPY with your weight... not that you "should be X pounds", but that no matter what you weigh, you are happy with that instead of striving to be a size 2 or something like that.

If you're just not eating enough (like using a starvation diet), that's NEVER a healthy option and will actually prevent you from losing weight. If your body doesn't get enough nutrition, it will drop your metabolism so you don't burn much fat (it goes into starvation mode).

That being said, if you want to lose weight, exercise is a really good (and safe) way to lose weight. In addition to that, I would recommend meeting with a nutritionist or dietitian to see if there is something else that may benefit you more.

Although when you're with your family for dinner, just ask for a healthier alternative (like baked potatoes, chicken, salad, etc) instead. You could tell them that you don't want steak/beef for that meal... or you could have a healthy snack before-hand and say you're not hungry enough for that big of a meal. For that matter, if you're young enough to be eating at home, you could offer to make your own supper, too... your mom might love that suggestion.

there is nothing wrong at all with consuming beef for diner. but since many cuts of beef are high in fat you would not want to consume any measurable amount of carbs with that meal. meals that are high in carbs and fats are major contributors to weight gain. just eat the beef and have some veggies, problem solved.

that sucks i have the same problem. i guess the right answer is "eat smaller portions" but how are we supposed to do that with a steak sitting in front of us?
