Stand up straight and push into your diaphram. People often make the mistake of singing from their nasal (like britney spears-eww gross!).

First and foremost do not drink anything cold before rehearsing or practicing. If anything, a warm cup of water will help relax your throat muscles and expand your airway.

When singing, cover one of your ears with your hand. You can also do both but you will actually hear your voice and tone much better this way. Hum a few notes and try it.

Also, using any instrument to practice the scale is a huge help. Standing upright and proper breathing is a key. Many vocal coaches will explain and show you how to breath properly.

Which brings me to my next suggestion. If you are serious about singing, involve a vocal coach. At least for a few preliminary lessons. They can not only gauge where you stand (alto, soprano, etc.) but will help guide you with some things you can do yourself when you practice. Some can be found quite easily and can be very inexpensive. Try some of your local schools' music departments first. They will not rip you off and and usually are very flexible.

I used a woman named Ms. Grimes who was with the Cleveland Opera when I was younger. I did not have a great talent for singing but she certainly helped me become much better then I was. I was very raspy and could nto hold a note to save my life. I did not become the next American Idol, but at least I wasnt embarrassing myself singing in chorus or around my friends anymore.

Good luck!

Try "Do re mi fa so la ti do" for 5 minutes and try to hold a specific note for a while, but make sure you BREATHE and let the air into your stomach so when you sing you can feel your stomach getting smaller. That will help you hold a note longer and better.

I know some of the problems you are describing (especially cracking) have to do with singing in the wrong key. If you can change the key, change it. If you can't, try singing an octave lower.

To stay on pitch
What worked for me was
Practising scales on the piano
Listening to music and singing along
Recording yourself sing and listen to what you're doing right and wrong

hope that helped :/

what i do is i sing from low to high going "doe, Ray, Me,Fa, So, La, Si,Doe, then go from high to low doign the same thing.

also. try to breath from the bottom of your stomach.
you know when you normally breath it comes from the top.

try breathing from the bottom. and sit up straight. or stand tall and just sing.
also try to find a song that fits your pitch u may not be able to go that high or low.

It would be a lot harder for me to sing and actually MAKE your voice disappear or crack or stay on pitch. If I could do that, I would be a powerful man! (or a very good ventriloquist).
