Not usually, but you wouldn't want to do it anyway without draining it out and putting fresh oil in it.

How did it get gas in there? Did it get flooded, by accident, maliciously, or is there a larger problem with your vehicle?

The gas will break down the oil, which will prevent the oil from properly lubricating the bearings. If you drive it like this too long, it will ruin the engine. Driving for a little while like this will at the very least decrease the life of the bearings and engine.

If the engine had not been run with the gas in the oil, then it should start and run if you tried to (assuming no other problems with the vehicle). Can't say for how long it would run, though. Also, the more gas, the quicker the oil will be broken down, the less it lubricates.

Carburetor on a 1997 Metro????? Call me crazy, but kinda hard to rebuild a carburetor on a fuel-injected vehicle!

It could be a leaking fuel injector, but that isn't the question they asked.
A leaking fuel injector could prevent the vehicle from starting as it would be flooding it out.

Probably whatever malfunctioned and put gas in the crankcase is causing it not to start.
It would not be a good idea to try and start it before getting the gas out of the crankcase, because it might explode.
