Well a lot of people say "God damn it!" "Oh my God"...for different reasons...I'm sure before we just started saying "Jesus Christ" out of anger there was a longer phrase...
Like it used to be "how do you do" and then "What is up" "What's up?" "sup" and who knows what will be next!!! Phrases change, so there was probably something else in that before...but it just got shortened down.

I think it probably came from people actually asking for spiritual help in these negative situations. It was more of a 'Jesus help me' kind of thing. Over the years though, it seems to have morphed into how you've described it's use, as a term of expression, surprise, etc. Just what I think based on what would make sense.

I call to Jesus Christ when in trouble. So? this is a way to call on Jesus when is a bad situation.
It is a sin to say "Jesus Christ" with every gripe. There is conscequences to griping. In all things give thanks for this pleases God.
And some are just using he Name of the Lord in vain.
One lady was on the bridge when it collapsed. She just had time to say "Jesus". And she was given peace that passes understanding. Miraculously she went down with the bridge but didn't get seriously hurt. Who soever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved.

Absolutely we SHOULD call out the name of Jesus in time of trouble. However, the temporary God of this world (who is yes, the devil) would have the precious Name of Jesus become meaningless. All that swearing is just another sign that Christ is the True, Living God...I mean...does anyone say oh, Buddha when they're angry? Or oh, Mohamed??? BTW, I often hear even Christians say, "OMG," without realizing it IS taking the name of their Lord in Vain. God bless.

Well here is my guess. Since there were a lot of harcore christians back in the day maybe when somthing bad happen they were mad at Jesus because they thought he caused it so they say "Jesus Christ" in anger, Then it just evolved over the days into people saying it when they are mad.

In the context you describe, "Jesus Christ" is not a religious word any more than f**k George Bush means one wants a special night in the Lincoln Bedroom with Laura's hubby with the room-temperature IQ. It's a handy expression which has little if anything to do with the Jewish street preacher in the First Century.

Ever seen History Of The World Pt. 1? Check it out, specifically the scene about the waiter at the last supper. Hilarious.

...and what a beautiful prayer that is. The Catholic version adds the name of the Father and the Holy Spirit to that prayer, and makes the sign of the Cross.
Yes, we need to remind others of what Jesus means to us when they say that.
