Those are some average distances but distances are unique and individual, you just need to learn what you hit with each club and dont compare yourselve to anyone else. If your a short hitter especially! Dont hit harder and loose accuracy just to keep up with your playing partners.
There should be 150yard markers on the courses! If your not good at judging distances try and picture a space which distance you know. For instance your back yard. If it is 50yards long and you can fit around three and a half of your "yards" between yourself and the yard then your safe to assume that your about 165-185 yards away.
Judging distance is absolutely essential to playing a good round of golf, the pro's do it accurately to within just a few yards which is why thier pro's.
My advice to you is that if you cant gauge distance accurately then invest in a laser range finder. There expensive but if you cant gauge distance then your game will struggle hugely.
Hope i've been of help!

This answer varies from person to person. What you need to decide is how far do you it the ball with each club. The distance will vary between clubs. If you hit the ball long there may be 13-15 yards between clubs. If you are a short hitter there may only be 7-8 yards between clubs. This assumes that the loft of each club is correct (and that may not be the case - a club repair person may be able to tell you).

Here's how to figue out your length.
On a normal day (no wind) Using your clubs and your brand of balls choose a par three hole. If the yardage is 160 (the yardage is usually measured to the center of the green) what club do you hit so that the ball flies to the center of the green? You will have to check where does the ball land? Does it land 10 short and then roll on the green? You want to learn where it lands. If you use an 8 iron (just an example) Now you have a benchmark. If you know how far the ball flies you can adjust if the course is hard and rolls or soft and sticks. Each club you have will vary from this point. Next figure out which club you hit 200 yards - 4 iron for my example. There would be 10 yards between each club. If I hit my 5 iron 200 yards then there would be 13 yards between each club.

It doesn't matter how far you hit the ball. It does matter if you KNOW how far. Most golfers hit the ball shorter than they think. They are always short (and usually right) of their target. Remember the yardages are for your REGULAR shots not the once in a lifetime shot.

To figure out how far you are. There are usually markers on the course. 150 stakes are white and on the sides of the hole 150 yards away from the center of the green. You can pace the steps needed to get to that stake to help you decide. If your ball is 10 steps farther than the stake then you would be 160 yards away.

Good luck.

Each club is made differently. The clubs that the pros use are bent 45 degrees so that they can hit them farther. An average club is not bent so it is standard and is meant to go a certain distance for example: A driver is 200-250 yds. 3 wood is 175-200 yds, etc. just to give you an example.
