Depends how well you do it. In rural NH it's hardly anything to put an inch of tar on dirt. In CA it's not a lot more since their roads are crap too. Costs a lot more in states that do a good job and costs more again in countries where they actually build roads to last.

In Britain motorways cost 25 million pounds ($50M) per mile per lane, last I heard. But they last about five times as long as cheap-*** Californian interstates which I get to watch develop holes on a daily basis.

The Interstates cost an average of $1.6 million per mile, but that was a long time ago.

Currently US freeways (at least in Washington State) cost $25M/lane/mile. Two lanes, $50M/mile.

$1 million a mile. new construction. resurfacing is also expensive as it is petro based
