I normally lock my hubs in the begining of winter and leave them locked till spring. You can shift from 2 wheel to 4 wheel HIGH while moving at speeds under 55 mph. But do not try to shift from 2 wheel to 4 wheel low while moving. This will damage the transfer case. You can shift back from 4 wheel high to 2 wheel while moving as well. As I run down the road, if I hit ice, I just slip it into 4wheel high till the road is dry again and then back to 2 wheel high. The only thing it does when you lock the hubs is make the front axle turn, unless you put it it 4wheel drive. you might notice a slight decrease in MPG but no harm is done. In fact, I have changed out from full time 4 wheel drive hubs and installed locking hubs on several vehicles over the years.
