Breeds of dog that are good with kids as in they will stand over the kids and like protect them and stay next to them even when the doorbell rings. I know this comes also with training and bonding but I know that there are some breeds of dogs that will naturally enjoy doing this.

And what about horsedogs? You know the ones that love following you while you ride?

My Australian Shepherd is protective of the children, they also enjoy playing ball with her. My family & I own several horses , our Aussie tags along while we ride. She also goes to several barrel races a year with us. Australian Shepherds have tons of energy, so if you live a active lifestyles they fit in nicely ! They are also very intelligent & easy to train. It took only 2 weeks to housetrain her.

As far as a family protective dog I would say the German Shepard is the best.
When it comes to horses, I have had every kind of dog around my horses with no problem. I think dogs are smarter then we give them credit for. They seem to know that the more then 1000 lb beast can do them harm.
That is for the most part. I have been out riding and have had dogs come running up and barking. I just turned my horse and chased the dog away.

Check www.petfinder.com. If you have a specific breed in mind and do a search, there are little icons that say "Good with children/cats/dogs", etc.
