It started a few years back and hasn't gone away. I just cannot lie on the right side without the left arm and hand numbing less than a minute later and staying thus until I change around. Told hospital doctor upon visit three years ago for other condition, but he said it was nothing. Also right now as I'm typing the left hand is numbing, so I have to rest it by bringing arm down.

I have experienced the EXACT same thing before. I went to a chiropractor and after an Xray he determined I had a pinched nerve in my neck area. After the very first adjustment in his office I saw a remarkable improvement and with continued and periodic adjustments it has finally went away completely. It's most likely nothing serious just something that can happen with everyday life and normal body movement. By the way most health care plans cover chiropractic treatments nowadays. There is also a rather cheap but great device you can purchase to use at home in conjunction with chiripractic adjustments (not sure of what it's called) but it works wonders. It is like a vinyl pillow with velcro strap that you lie on and it pulls slightly upward on your head to relieve and release the tension between your neck vertebrae. (Feels FANTASTIC too!) Ask any Chiropractor where you can get one or check with a local medical supply house. PS..... some people are scared of going to a chiropractor, much like being afraid of dentists but the benefits greatly outweigh the slight discomfort. Actually I don't even look at it as discomfort since it only lasts for a split second each time he 'cracks' the joints to loosen them and allow the surrounding muscles to relax the tension relief is UNBELIEVEABLE! I have actually went to a chiropractor and paid out of my own pocket just for the great flexibility and tension relief it gives. Just try it I bet you will love the results, but watch out it feels sooooo good it can become addictive

It would be best that you contact your Doc and update him/her. He/she will evaluate you and determine if you should be seen by a specialist - Neurologist. It sounds as though there is some nerve " pinched " and that could cause these symptoms. It is not uncommon to have this. But, the left hand could also indicate carpal tunnel syndrome, again, you would need to evaluated by a Neurologist. Your symptoms have been occurring for too long now. You need a check-up SOON. I hope that this helps and good luck.

it's called nerve impingement.
somewhere between the spine and your shoulder the nerve that inervates the arm is getting "kinked" (think water hose)
this will cause numbness and pain. Check with a chiropractor, physical therapist or a good massage therapist.

Sounds like a nerve is being impinged either in your neck or shoulders. See a doctor of orthopedic medicine or a chiropractor. You need to get proper treatment for this condition.
