Odd scenario but curious as to what would happen. You are an Ensign aboard a U.S. Aircraft carrier located 200 miles off the coast of a major African city. You have just received word that both of your parents have been tragically killed in a car accident. The ship will not be docked in port for another month. Would the Captain allow you to be transported off the ship on a Seahawk or other form of air transportation towards the African city to return back home? Is this a scenario that would happen?

the red cross would handle notification once that happened your captian would try to get you off on the 1st available transport off the ship.

All of your travel would be free by the way and it would not count against you leave time. its called emergency leave.

I know this becuase my dad died while i was deployed in the marines

If the red cross passes the message I wouldn't see why they would hold him/her up. I was on board a ship when a Marines dad passed on. He was off the ship in 48 hrs. Keep in mind though, if the ship is too far to fly someone and is not able to leave th AO because of operations, it may take a while.

there will be arrangements made if possible to transport anyone receiving a Red Cross message back home. It will take a couple of days but it will happen.

First call should be to the Red Cross...this is what they do. Arrangements are made with the Military by them and every effort is made to airlift them home. A family member need only provide the personal details.

Yes. They would use the COD (Carrier on Delivery) aircraft to get you ashore. Since you would be on emergency leave from the military, most civilian airlines being apprised of the matter would treat your luggage as "EL" (Emergency Leave) category and it would be loaded aboard with the crew's luggage and be off-loaded first as well.

Well, I know in the Army, even when deployed, if someone in your immediate or very close family dies, they let you take emergency leave, well depending on if the COC considers it a true emergency. So you take a chinook back to kuwait, then you fly commercial from kuwait to the states. Navy though, don't know how it works if you're out at sea.

The red cross would notify your commander and you would probably be on the next transport off, probably the mail plane. But no, they will not drop you off in a civilian city.
