we have a brick fireplace on one wall of our living room and it's pretty, but there used to be a wood burning stove hooked up to it and now that we've taken it out I would like to do something decorative with the opening but I'm not sure what to do.

Clean and paint the fireplace a contrasting color (if you want it to be a focal point in the living room) or a like color if you want it to fade into the wall. Get some tall candle holders, some medium ones and some smaller ones. Then put in the candles and on those romantic evenings, you just light them up. Or you can use holiday decorations and remove the candles. Use your imagination and have fun!!

You don't say what your decorating style is. There are many different ways to spruce it up. You could buy a screen to fit your style and just put that up. You could buy (Pier 1 has a good selection) a beautiful candelabra and put that inside, that way you will still have the "atmosphere" of a fireplace. Another option is to buy/make a custom screen out of wood or fabric to match your decor. You may want to paint the inside of the firebox also. Look at some magazines for ideas, you might even want to go to a specialty store that sells inserts to get some ideas you can use. Good Luck.

Tons of different sized candles in area where fire/logs would be is very nice/dramatic looking. Or fill empty area with a tall basket with artificial flowers( change @ each season) ,also a very stricking look. Good Luck in your adventure!

Put a few candles in there. Then you can light them up when you want it to look nice. Maybe a mix of short fat ones and tall skinny ones.
