I have a female cocker spaniel. She is a year and 4 months old and around 20 lbs. I was planning on getting her spayed sometime in the near future. She is very hyper right now. I have asked many people if I get her spayed will she be less hyper. Some say yes and some say no. When dogs are spayed are they less hyper? And what are other Advantages/Disadvantages to spaying a dog?

Advantages Of Spaying A Dog

The only disadvantages are from bad vets. This can include anything that can happen anytime something has surgery. Dogs don't really gain weight from being altered but because they are usually altered at the age where metabolism naturally slows down. The advantages are that you can let your dog play with other dogs with no fear, you don't have little red dots all around your house and you don't have to hide her away while she is in heat. Oh and the best reason of all, you don't have to find homes for all the unwanted puppies and you save the life of all the shelter puppies that can find homes instead.

I generally would say she should be spayed around 6mo but talk to your vet and see what they think. You need to build a rep with a vet anyhow. Take her with you and see the vet in person so that she knows that the vet isn't always there to poke her but sometimes you can just go and talk and get treats!!!

Well, the advantages are that she will have no puppies in the future. (Trust me, I have experienced puppies before and they are a hassle!) She also won't bleed when she's in heat, because she won't be in heat at all. I'm not sure about the hyper thing. After we got our Labs spayed and neutered, they seemed a bit more mellow, but I didn't really pay attention to that. I can't think of any disadvantages, but others might.

There is only one disadvantage to spaying a dog, and that is that is slows down their metabolism, which can make them more prone to weight gain. This is however perfectly controllable with decent quality food (i.e not a supermarket brand). I suppose you could call the anaesthetic risk a disadvantage, but these days this is very minimal.

The advantages however, are MANY!:

+ reduced risk of mammary cancer
+ eradicates risk of ovarian and uterine cancer
+ eradicates risk or pyometra
+ prevents unwanted sexual behaviour
+ stops unwanted puppies coming in to the world
+ protects your dog (and your wallet) from risks associated with pregnancy and whelping

I could go on, but I think the health issues are the number one reason to spay your dog.

Neutering does not really calm down much - most spayed dogs I've known haven't changed a bit! Do it for the sake of her health - and soon, because with every season she has she's increasing her likelihood of getting mammary cancer when older.

Disadvantages: NONE!!
There are too many advantages to name. Spaying does not make a dog more or less hyper but she will continue to mature and probably get less hyper on her own. She will be healthier spayed and you don't have to worry about accidental litters and no messy heat cycles.
Get her spayed!!

Advantages: she won't bleed out of her crotch on your carpet,
other dogs won't come into your yard to hump her, she will be less likely to run away, the companion animal world is way overpopulated(70% of dogs in human socieities get put to sleep, even purebred-I believe a total of 30% of purebred dogs in the world are euthanised(way toomany labs and pitbulls)
Disadvantages: none, your dog will be a good friend to you spayed or not, but a dog who doesn't have to go through pregnancy and stray dogs' advances will live a bit longer and happier life.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU8ME

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Like Greekman, I have a link for you to read...

Rather then give you the usual no disadvantages that 99% of the people try to push on everyone, I would rather you make an informed decision.

There are very real disadvantages to spaying your dog.

Spaying/neutering ususally CALMS them down and also prevents unwanted pregnancies/puppies. There just aren't enough good people out there to take care of all of the "unwanted" animals..spaying will prevent this. Just give your spaniel lots of love and attention..she will love you forever for it. Good Luck.
