Hi i have a 18 month old female cat. We have been looking after my friends 8 week old female kitten and my cat fell in love with her and they got on great. She went back yesterday and now my cat seems very lonely and upset. We were going to get a kitten but we kept putting off but now we are definatley going to get one now. The only problem we are only coming across males. I have heard that Males spray alot and are not very clean. Also would my female cat get on with a male one??

Thanks in advance xxxx

I've always heard that if you are going to have just two cats in the household, it's a good idea to get one of each sex. That way, they don't go through a lot of territorial fighting.
I used to have one of each and they did just fine together...they groomed one another and played well. It was a nice little marriage.
As long as you get the male cat fixed, he will not spray. My male cat was VERY clean. He was particular about grooming and the like, so I think you should be okay.
Oh! Sorry to hear about your cat's withdraw from the other cat. Getting another one will probably soothe that emotional pain.
Good luck!

Hi, the best thing to do, if you end up with a male, is to ensure that you get him neutered when he's 5 months old and also would be a good idea to get your female spayed if you haven't already. Male cats can spray but this does not usually happen till they are 1 year old and usually only occurs when they feel threatened in their home - i.e. the presence of other toms in the area or moving home for example. I have a 5 month old male and when he was almost 4 months old we got a female kitten of 12 weeks, i was also worried at first not about the spraying issue but because of the potential mating issue! however as males are not sexually mature till 9 months and females at 7 months it really wasn't an issue and now i have just got my male neutered it won't be an issue at all! oh and regarding the cleanliness thing, regardless of their gender all cats are very clean animals. My 2 fought like cat and mouse (excuse the pun!) when we first got the female but now they are best friends an d are always curling up to sleep together and chasing each other around its lovely to watch, good luck with yours!

AWWWW.... thats sad but cute... i have 3 males and one female..they get along just fine...She is 3 yrs and the males are 1 year, 7 months, and 4 months... there isnt much of a difference with one being cleaner than the other.. i think they are both the same...but yes a male cat will spray at about 6-8 months...i have a 7 month old and he hasnt started yet...but the plus side is that male cats cost less to fix and you can ususally get them fixed 4-6 months so you wont be subjected to the spraying...i went to my SPCA and got my male cat fixed for 10 dollars for a drive thing they were having...personally i think male kittens and cats have more unique personalties than females, but thats my opinion...

I think that males cats are as clean as females---and spraying can happen with either females or male---

If the males are fixed or will be at the right age--there will not be a prob with it spraying.....

Sometimes the same sex kittens have a hard time dealing with each other......rivalry can start!

WE just adopted a 7month old Male and introduced him to our female 1yr old female--after shots and tests.....they had a few fights--not bad--just regular..and at times give each other looks.....but have adapted really well==

I like male cats better than females......they seem to have better personalities....but they are all like people---everyone is different!!
Good luck--and go with a good one for you!
They will adapt!

Well, Males -er- spraying is kinda a myth...i know this bc i have a FEMALE that sprays all the time. Any ways... if your cat likes this kitten, then there is a possibility she wont like many others (cats are very stubborn) so when looking for a kitten, bring the cat with you, see which one she likes.

Hey,
I think they do spray a lot but have heard that once you have them neutered they stop. Just keep looking for females if it makes you feel better. I had a cat but on wed night I let her out and she tried to get back in but she normally goes away and comes back but she still hasn't been back, I feel terrible cos I shouted at her for trying to get near the baby and like if I had of let her in it wouldn't have happened. Try RSPCA think they have loads.

Male cat only spray when you don't get them Neutered. Spay and neuter your pets. That is responsible pet owners, Male cats are so wonderful and all cats clean them selves. Spay and neuter your cats, please.... Best of Luck...Animal control will tell you..

no males dont spray in the house unless they aren't litter trained. my boy cat is extremly clean, hes always cleaning himself. boys get along fine with girls, same as girl girl, and boy boy. it all depends on the cats! gl!

you should ask your vet if he/she knows of any shelters and call in advance to see if there are friendly female kittens. GOOD LUCK!
