Maybe I come off as a cheapskate but i live about 30 min out of town and when I have to catch a taxi home, I often ask around to where people are going if they want to share.
Is this rude?
Surely I could be doing them a favour as well as myself.
I have gotten home before on 10 dollars instead of 40.
But people being people, often look at me like I'm asking them for a lift home in their car or something.

I am saving them money by pitching in and saving greenhouse emissions. Of coarse I ask nicely, doesnt mean they dont give sour responses.

I`ve done this a few times.
Of course it makes sense, it`s just that it`s not the norm in this culture, where taxis are a semi-luxury, so you can expect a few funny looks.
I wouldn`t let it bother you though- why not save money?

It's not rude. Be aware of your tone when you ask, however, because these days most people are paranoid to have anything to do with a stranger for fear it's a trick or a ploy to 'get them'. Unfortunately, you'll run across people like that who will snub you when you ask or give you a dirty look. If that's the case, let it go and maybe you will find a person who is willing to split the cab fair. If someone is going your way, I'd think they would take it as a kind gesture to split the fair and save you both money. If you're a guy, you may find that women are the more likely culprits of the paranoia and dirty looks, so keep that in mind. I don't think that they are meaning to be rude, but more so protecting themselves from what they may perceive as a possible threat.

Essentially you are asking them from a lift in their car as they are paying for the use of the cab space. This is a breach of etiquette and in this day and age, can be dangerous.
Asking someone to share a ride is really only appropriate if you already know the person or if through small talk, you discover that you are both going in the same general direction.
I understand that you are saving money, but it really is inappropriate.

I think this is a very resourceful way to do things, but I can see why people would be surprised. Generally speaking, it's not typical to find yourself sharing a taxi with a stranger. I'm sure they could simply be reacting to the idea of sharing close quarters with a person they've never met.

Depends on how aggressively you ask.
If you do this every time, and you reek of desperation, it is probably a bit off-putting to some; maybe even rude to others.
If it's become such a necessity to you, you may consider finding some other means of more affordable transportation.

I don't know about rude, but I personally would be creeped out if I didn't know you. You've got to be careful these days.

Most people would rather not share for fear of strangers.

I think that depends entirely on how you ask it.
