Microwaves (the waves themselves) heat and cook food by "stirring up" the molecules. So does fire or indirect heat like a regular oven.

If the human body is exposed to enough microwaves, there can be serious problems, but microwave ovens protect against that. (That's what the holey screen behind the window is for. And the waves don't stay in the food, or it would never cool!) If a m.w. oven is dropped or broken, have a pro check it, but they've become cheap enough that it's probably easier to buy a new one.

If you search the 'Net hard enough, you can probably find articles that claim to prove that *everything* causes cancer! That's because we'd like to believe that if we just do everything right, we'll be happy, healthy and live forever. Sadly, it just ain't so. Remember, if they survived measles, black plague and animal attack, people have always been susceptible to cancers.

a microwave is perfectly safe, it's the container you use that you need to be very careful with. Plastics for the most part release carcinogens when heated in a microwave, never ever heat anything in plastic in a microwave. Use glass or paper never plastics. If the dish must be covered to prevent splatter, use wax paper or a paper towel or even cover the dish with a plate, do not use plastic wrap.
