How about some definitions here:
A curse is asking God to do something to bring some mishap to someone, example: "Burn in h----" , or "God d---- you"
If he says "God d--- it",this is considered taking God's name in vain; he is not d---ing a person.".
Swear means to take an oath, or call upon God to witness the truth of what we say, example: When in the court room, a witness must say, "I swear or affirm that I will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth." A bailiff may ask the question and the witness replies, "I do."
Is taking God's name in vain a sin?. Yes, according to the Ten Commandments. And a curse, a sin. Yes are suppose to love our enemies, at least to the extent we are willing to pray for them.

Good first answer...I'd go a bit farther to say that using God's name in a curse, cursing God, and cursing others are sins. In this context, the term "curse" refers to wishing harm on others such as saying "God will send you to hell for that", wishing that God himself would be harmed, or wishing that God would cause someone else to suffer and/or die...that is cursing and that is wrong.
Using "naughty words" (my British friend uses that phrase) is not cursing...cussing isn't cursing. I'm not yet convinced that any word is particularly "naughty" just because a group of people think that it is...I wouldn't attach the word "sin" to the use of words that some or even many people think are "inappropriate". Unlike George Carlin, God didn't give us a list of "seven dirty words you can't say on television" or in life. If he thought a word was a big issue, he would have used it...and the only words mentioned specifically in the bible as sinful were words related to the earlier definition of cursing.
Of course, some might rightly claim that if the use of "cuss words" would cause some (or many) to turn away from your testimony (to dismiss the things you say), then you should stop using those words. This would be a biblical AND a worldly principle...if using a known cuss word caused you to lose the respect of an employer or person you're doing business with, you should stop using the word (at least in business situations) or risk the consequences.
Personally, I don't have a problem with words per se...I try to listen to the message instead of evaluating individual words...I think God has the ability to do something similar. But I also accept that I'm responsible for the words I choose to use and if any of those words cause another person to dismiss my testimony or worse, to dismiss God, he will hold me responsible for those mistakes! He's already working on some of the words he wants me to eliminate from my vocabulary and I have no doubt he'll inform me of others over the next 40 years or so (God willing)!

In Judaism it is widely considered a sin to curse. About the google example, of course it would only be a sin if you used the word knowing the meaning that comes with me, since, of course, the whole reason why it's so bad is the actual meaning of the word and what it brings to mind.

No, if you are deliberatly calling someone a curse word, then this is hatred, which Jesus said on the sermon on the mount is the same as murdering someone in Gods eyes.
Speaking the name of the Lord for cursing purposes is also a sin called blasphemy.
However, Jesus also said that all men are guilty of sin. This is why he gave his life to take the punishment for you.

The Bible says "To him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin." It is whats in your heart that counts. If you curse and are angry, it is sin. If you are a bad example to others around you by cursing, it is sin. Do the right thing and say things that are pleasing to others. Be an example of good not an example of bad.

It is a sin to take gods name in vain.
It is taboo to use the "curse" words of you language and culture in a public environment. It might, also, be against the law.
ADD: At the very least, using curse words in public is seen as having no self control, being rude, and often as being stupid or uneducated (unable to express yourself without resorting to vulgar language).
When it comes to "foreign" languages and cultures there is a certain amount of leniency given to the innocent, ignorant or mis-informed. After all they are just words.
Phuc is a common Vietnamese word and appears on many restaurant signs. Sometimes we giggle to ourselves, but only children laugh outright about something that is clearly not English.
But then we can use that to our advantage. Many censors ignore curse words that are not in American English. "Bloody" is a really bad word in British English whereas they do not consider the f-bomb nearly as bad as we do. In the sci-fi show "Firefly" they used Chinese curses taught to the actors phonetically to add color to the show and get around the sensors.
ADD, ADD: Many common "minor" curse words in English are curse words in Yiddish (European Jewish).

Both, I think.
We're condemned by our heart's intention, and also for 'stumbling' others. So, if you 'know' (feel, believe)something isn't right, it isn't. If someone else 'knows' (feels, believes) something's not right, it isn't, for them. If your words/actions (which you feel free to express) would cause hesitation for another, you're taking advantage of your freedom, and responsible for troubling another's spirit.
A lot is 'relative' here, subject to perspective. To have a clear conscience, we need to consider what effect our actions & words have on those viewing and hearing us.
After this is given proper consideration, then we STILL have the job of being true to ourselves, not 'living for others' or putting their needs ahead of our own so much as to cause ourselves imbalance.
Work, work, work, even when we play.
Best wishes on 'splitting the hairs'.

if it is a curse word to the listener, then you are sinning. Your value is one thing, your motive is another. If you are ignorant, and use it not knowing it is a curse word, it is not a sin.

cursing just brings more hate into the world. whether using
the LORD'S name in vain, or good ole cussing, it just
spreads negativity. am i guilty of it ? sorry yes i am. but
i do pray about it. ( funny i only cursed alot after 1998?)
it ruins one witness. be careful of insulting someone
elses diety, whether christian or otherwise. it is just that
cursing is so prevalent in our society. it is a good idea to
get rid of this nasty habit. i thought about learning how
to swear in cantonese but it would still be swearing. i
working hard on cutting it completely from my vocabulary.
thanks for asking though it helped me to take account of
it in my own life. Thank You. Good Question.
