My friend works at a hospital and she has access to local anastecis. We have been talking about her bringing it home and then giving me a local needle then cutting off the mole. I don't have health insurance and the doctor said he would charge me $1300 for the procedure. Its on my back and its getting bigger and starting to bother me when i sit down.

My friend has no problem pulling the mole and taking a razor blade to it. I consulted my doctor about it. He said it isn't cancerous but should most defintely be removed by a professional. He also said if I do it anyway, which he strongly advises not to, then I shopuld go and see him for a follow up to make sure it does not get infected. i think he just wanted my money. He charges $80 for a non-insurance visit. Most other doctors in my area do the same.

So whats your opinion? Am I nuts?

This is a very, very bad idea. First, it involves your friend stealing anaesthetics from the hospital. Secondly, it involves you (not medically trained) doing a medical procedure on yourself. You could damage your skin permanently, giving yourself a big scar, or even accidentally cut an artery or something. Find a doctor who will do it for you.

I am not quite sure why this question was put in etiquette either. Anyway, it is a very bad idea (if you are serious). Not only extremely painful but it could be detrimental to your health. A mole should always be examined and removed by a professional, then biopsied. There is always the possibility of having cells in the mole that are the beginning stages of a malignancy. I would find another doctor if it were me.

first of all why is this in etiquette. second ur mad to do this, you may be able to cut the mole off but how do you propose to stop the bleeding. normally when moles are removed they are stitched. and what if it gets infected? if your friend is bringing anaesthetic home from the hospital that is stealing and must surely be gross professional misconduct. how is your doctor 100% sure its not cancerous u need to have it tested by a path lab to determine that. what if u cut it off and in the future you get skin cancer who will you blame? the reason it costs that much for a doctor to do it may give you a clue its a skilled job not one to be undertaken by yourself. dont do it.

Yes, why is this in etiquette? And, by the way, your friend is not much of a friend if she wants to perform ANY kind of surgical procedure on you without a medical license.
There are public health facilities you can visit, and they'll do it for free, or very low cost. I doubt your doctor is only trying to bilk you for money.
Don't let your "friend" anywhere near you with anything sharper than a wet washcloth!!!!

Yes, you are nuts. Get it professionally removed and biopsied. Besides I had 1 removed by the dr and it got infected. Imagine what damage you could do at home. Don't take chances with your health.

First of all, your doctor might just want your money, but he probably wants to make sure it doesn't get infected, think about it -- If he did just want your money, he wouldn't tell you to get a checkup, that way, when it did get infected, (Which I'm sure it will), you'll have to go in and it will cost more money to treat it.

Dude, just save up and get it removed professionally.

These fricken doctors are damned dirty apes!

They don't know what they're doing - why do you think they call its "practicing" medicine. Hell, I say practice yourself.

BTW, if you're anything like my GF, while your getting that mole removed, why not perform a hysterectomy on yourself?

No reason to waster a good dosage of local anesthetic.

Yes, you are nuts. I hope for your sake that you don't hurt yourself. On the other hand, I have learned to not worry too much when I hear about people who sound like they're auditioning for a "Jackass: The Movie" sequel.

Put it this way: i hope that if you do seriously hurt yourself that my tax dollars don't have to pay to take care of you.

yes, your dr is right, he is NOT just after your money in this case, this type of thing IS best left to a professional, not just for infection concerns but for possible scarring as well, and i'm sure a few other complications
