I'm always amazed at how many people get this wrong. the < or > always points at the smaller number. for example; 10 is greater than 5 is expressed as 10>5. 5 is less than 10 is expressed as 5<10. they symbol always points to the lesser (smaller) number.

The best way to remember this is "The Alligator" The gator will eat the bigger number. So, the symbol points to the smaller number. 10>5 or 4<19 etc. The "mouth of the alligator" will point to the larger number. That's how I learned it, hope that helps!

While the above responders' answers are technically correct, it's important your daughter can recognize what each symbol actually represents: < less than, > greater than. Yes, using the alligator or shooting analogy will work on worksheets but I find many of my fourth graders don't know what the symbols really mean. For instance, if I were to write > on the board, many who learned the alligator/shooting technique don't know the symbol means "greater than" and vice versa.

I teach my students two ways to remember:
< is less than because it points left and left and less than both start with L.
I have my students hold up their hands with the less than symbol on their left hand (like a mouth) and the same with the right hand. Again, the LEFT hand shows the LESS than symbol (LEFT = Less than) and right hand is the greater than symbol.

The symbol points to the smaller number and the Pac Man eats the bigger number. Whenever there is a line under it, that means greater than, or equal or less than or equal.

10>5, the > sign "eats" the larger number. Think of a hungry alligator who wants to eat the bigger quantity of two choices. If the choices are 35 and 20, it would eat 35.
