If you'll be right on the LA area... then....
Hollywood - go see the Star Walk of Fame along Hollywood Blvd, and the famous Mann Chinese Theather is also there. You can also walk aroun Hollywood & Highland, where there are shops and foods, and entertainments on the streets, plus by starbucks (next to California Pizza Kitchen) you'll be able to see a glance of the "Hollywood" sign! The Kodak Theather (where the Academy Award is hosted at) is also located right on Hollywood&Highland. Right across, there's the Hooters Restaurant, it's like a sports bar with good chicken wings and waitresses in tight short shorts.. haha!
Universal Studio Hollywood - largest entertainment in LA (that's what people say)! If you don't have time to go to the themepark (it would need one full day) then just got to the Universal City Walk, and outdoor place where you can find a lot of food + shops and also a movie theather. Really nice, especially at nighttime. But if you do have a chance to go to the theme park, make sure you go on the Studio Tour, that's something you can't miss!
Farmers Market at the Grove in LA - (cross street: fairfax and 3rd) it's also an outdoor shopping center, with a nice setting and at the Farmers Market, you can basically find any kind of food you want. There's japanase, chinese, mexican, french, american, middle-eastern, italian, brazilian, you name it :) Or you can always get out a little bit, there's always the famous Pink's Hotdog. (cross street: La Brea and Melrose), the line might be really long, but it's worth the wait :) Very famous!
Getty Museum - the museum collects and exhibits classical sculpture and art, European paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculpture, decorative arts, and photographs. but it's really nice, and there's also a nice garden where you can relax with a beautiful setting and a nice view of Los Angeles. Even if you don't museum, I'd still recomment the Getty's. It's more than just a museum!
Beverly Hills - the famous Rodeo Drive, where you can go shopping, and sight-seeing all day!
Santa Monica - BEACH! and the Santa Monica Pier, has Pacific Park where there are some carnival rides, and a very nice high-ferris-wheel, where you can see the view of the ocean, and the cities from up top, there's also a small arcade where you get to play games. Along the pier, there are some local entertainments and a direct access to the beach. There's also the Santa Monica 3rd St Promenade (almost right across from the beach), and that is an outdoor shopping center, with nice entertainments on the sides also. So it's like a 3 in 1 deal :) Beach, Pier, Promenade!
Clubs -these are the famous L.A clubs, where sometimes you can spot celebrities at some of these clubs: Hyde, Area, Les Deux, Parc, Priviledge, Mood, Teddy’s, Skybar, Roxy, Tryst, Whiskey (a-go-go), The Spyder Club, The Viper Room, House of Blues.
Staples Center - home of the Los Angeles Lakers (NBA), that's right on Downtown LA.
Dodgers Stadium!
A little bit outside the L.A area, there's always..
Anaheim - is where Disneyland and Disney California Adventure is located, if you're there, make sure to visit Downtown Disney, for a walk. If you're going into the amusement park(s), I'd say you go during the weekday in the middle of the week, it'll be less crowded, and a bigger chance for you to get through the whole park. And no, it's not just for only kids! If that what you really think then just got to CAlifornia adventure. Also, there's Crystal Cathedral near by, it's a Cathedral where it's all made out of glass, very beautiful, you should try to check it out i you have the time. Oh and the Angels Stadium!
Buena Park - Knott's Berry Farm, western style theme park with pretty good roller coaster rides.
Long Beach - Aquarium of the Pacific, it's pretty nice and neat, there's also The Queen Mary, and go a little bit to the other side of Long Beach, there will be Naples Island, it's like a little version of Italy, you can ride the Gondola there, which can be pretty romantic.
San Marino - visit the Huntington Library Park. It's a really really nice botanical garden, there's also art collections there. But the garden is nice, I love it there. And they have a very big and nice Japanese garden. It can be very romantic there too. Keep in mind that they close at 4:30.
Ah, okay.. that's all I can think of right now, but I hope it helps :)

There are a lot of kids at Disneyland, but if you're never gone to there or to Disneyworld, it's definitely worth a trip. All rides are theme based so you get an immersive experience and not just the thrill of a ride. Check out things like the Star Wars ride, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, the Indiana Jones ride, and don't forget the Pirates of the Caribbean. I'd also highly recommend Thunder Mountain. This is an unassuming roller coaster ride that may not look that that interesting compared to the other attractions. But it's really fast and you're zooming through some very tight curves and tunnels that gives it a real thrill. I swear, the number of times I've been on it, there's this one hole you're going into where the top of the tunnel looks like it's so low, I think it's got to hit my head that I instinctively duck my head every time I see it.
Disney California Adventure is a new theme park next door that highlights the culture and tastes of California. You can purchase a single ticket for one park or for both. My opinion is that California Adventure isn't worth it especially if you only have a few days, and unless you want to breeze through everything, it's POSSILBE to do both in a single day, but if you have other plans, just skip California Adventure.
If you want to do the amusement park thing, definitely go to Six Flags Magic Mountain--really good for roller coaster rides. I would skip Universal Studios tours unless you really are into Hollywood productions.
Knott's Berry farm isn't too far from Disneyland and it has a nice western country theme mixed with a fair amount of rides and shows. If you go there, and you like fried chicken, you HAVE to visit this fried chicken restaurant (forgot it's name) that's across the street from the front entrance in a small outdoor mall-sy area. Ask anyone there and they'll know what you're talking about.
It should be clarified that those that mentioned Universal Citywalk (right outside Universal Studios) and Downtown Disney (in between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure) are free outside hangout areas that filled with restaurants and shops that's best visited (especially Citywalk) after hours when the park closes. It's more of a night crowd. It's open in the daytime, but why waste your days there when you can do something else, then go there at night.
If you're into shopping, someone mentioned The Grove by Farmer's Market is good. There are tons of malls in LA, but they are spread out all over the place. The 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica is also good. That's a few walking blocks away from the Santa Monica Pier and the beach and ocean.

Of course your guy pals wiill love the City Walk at Universal Studios, there are plenty of bars and the Hard Rock Cafe. Most men like the jumbo tron if there is a game or good concert on.
Downtown Disney is also a man hang place. The ESPN Zone, catch a game and drink plus then head over to the House of Blues.
If the Dodgers are in town (which they are this coming week) take them to Philipes (think that is how it is spelled) a real down and dirty beef steak sandwhich shop near Chinatown then head over to a Dodger game. The Dodgers are in San Diego next weekend I think..
Or if the Angels are in town catch a game and hit up Hooters after the game, alot of people go there.
All else fails head for Santa Monica Pier men love games and the arcade will please them or people watch in Venice.
TJ...Depending on whee your male friends are from, for some reason guys have this thing about seeing what TJ is all about.

If you're thinking in terms of theme parks, Knott's is a really fun place. Almost all of the rides are thrilling and are exciting to go on.
And Disneyland is really for families and kids...try California Adventure; they cater to the older crowd. It's also smaller than Disneyland, which takes off a load of walking.
