I'm wondering what everyone else thinks about numerology, especially as it applies to religion. Why are some numbers (such as 666 or 13) "scary", some numbers (1 through 8 except 6, 777) "lucky", and some numbers (17, 19, 23, 42) either "special" or referenced in popular culture?

And where did "l337speak" come from (it's okay to groan), and what's the appeal?

Also, I've noticed some people get worked up when they have a song stuck in their head all day, and then they hear it on the radio.

So what's the fascination?

Much has to do with numerology, but it also has to do with co-incidence. When two things happen one after the other, it is not surprising that people will at least consider whether or not there is a cause-and-effect relationship. If it happens again, it may get spooky. That's our natural reaction to co-incidence: things happening in an apparent pattern.

Similarly with numerology. There really are certain numbers which have been endowed with magical significance by their being treated as though they had magical significance for long enough. A sort of self-fulfilling prophecy. My favorite number is 93, and if I wanted to, I could tell you why. But if that number comes out on the ticket to wait in line for the deli, I will put it in my pocket and keep it. Did it bring me good luck, or did the feeling that I have a good-luck charm in my pocket bring me good luck?

666 is considered scary because it is mentioned in the Bible as the number of the Great Beast. But those who read up on Aleister Crowley know that he took advantage of that to play with people's heads, because 6 in the kabbalah is a very positive number (a solar diety or the sun, or the son, depending on your orientation), so triple six would have been a good number if it were not for the book of Revelations.

So it goes with other numbers. 13 is considered unlucky for a variety of reasons, but the one most people cite is why Friday the 13th is especially unlucky. Because that is the day the pope chose to fall upon the Knights Templar, mostly because he wanted their treasure. But those of us who were born on the 13th of a month find it lucky, and especially lucky when it falls on a Friday. Maybe all the bad luck other people have is balanced out by our good luck. Or maybe it's just co-incidence.

42 is referred to as the answer to "Life, the Universe and Everything" in Douglas Adams' books, but it might also be a six-pack of 7-up.

666 actually turns out to be 9 which is a high spiritual number....
1337= 14=1+4=5 which is not a bad number either
7,9,&11 are high spiritual numbers

google numerology and find a site to break it all down for you.

I wouldn't run my life by numbers or astrology and those who practice the craft do not suggest it....

666 is the devil's number and its supposed to appear on the back of people's hands or forehead's if they go against God in the end of times. Some people say 7 is a God # cause it took God 7 days to make the Earth. I don't know about any other numbers.

The numeral sequence "666" is the mark of the beast said to be put on the forehead or right hand of those who are not saved and are deceived by the beasts from the water and earth during the Rapture. If you don't have this mark, you will not be able to buy or sell anything. But if you do get this mark, you will not be able to go to Heaven.

Ever heard of Theomatics? It is the study of the Bible based on the fact that the Hebrew and Greek alphabet letters also represent numbers. Thus it is provable that the Bible was in fact written by a Higher Intelligence check their website and learn about it.

I wish I could answer you. A lot of people are superstitious about numbers, black cats, 13, etc. A lot of our buildings here don't have a 13th foor. Does it take a genius to figure out that the 14th floor is really the 13th? Fri the 13th have always been good to me. I left my first husband on Fri 13th, etc.

1337 speak goes back to the pre-internet days of online bulletin boards, when operators would script simple searches to find and remove objectionable posts. So users would start using alternate spellingz and numb3r substitutions to defeat the searches. Hence "porn" became "p0rn", then later "pr0n" when the former became a common search target.
1337 is itself a substitution for "leet" which is a shorthand and alternate spelling of "elite".
