This is actually a sincere question. If every Christian, Next Sunday, instead of going to church for 3 hours, spent the time they would have doing charitable work, what do you think would happen? Would anybody convert if 3 hours out of the week were spent doing that instead of sitting in a church? I've got to tell you, the religion would be a lot more appealing if it did.

You know it's an interresting question. I can tell you historically the first Chistian Masses took place in crypts. Most religious people do more charity work and/or give more money than non-religious people. Charity work need not replace Sunday Mass. The imortance of Mass can be understood best by understanding the imortance of education in all areas of life. Going to church every week keeps a holy vigilance on the practice and teachings of the Holy sacraments so they do not become corrupted.
Charity is but one petal on the flower of Christs teachings. He did not only teach you should give of yourself. He tought that you should teach. He taught that you should Lead. He taught that you should follow. He taught humility, strength in the face of adversity and so much more.
You so you must understand, Abandoning Mass for Charity would, ultimately, corrupt Christs Message.
I hope this helps.

This is a sincere answer.
The practicing Christians that I know spend at least the average of 3 hours per day doing charitable work so that works out to 21 hours per week on the average.
If you want them to spend only 3 hours per week doing this kind of work then our support networks would be worse off that they already are.

They should be spending that much time any way... the time "in Church" is to learn and strengthen... for the purpose of going out and doing God's Work in the streets of the World.... going to "Church" is not the goal... it is the begining of The Work that all of The Faith are to be doing every day of the week.

Do I have to do it on the day I go to worship?
Why would you want to take that kind of time away from someone? We sure can do it another day there's seven days so why on the day someone who wants to enjoy fellowship with the Church family.
Its a day we come together to worship God.

Religion is not about if it appeals well or not. It's about worshiping GOD.
And remember the 3rd commandmant: Keep holy the sabbath day- which includes going to church

Why does going to learn from God mutually exclusive to doing the will of God (good works)?
Actually Jesus and his disciple said something similar to what you are suggesting. Jesus said, "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven" (Matthew 7:21).
And,
"Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead" (James 2:17).
But were do we learn good works from bad? Isn't it at the feet of our Savior, Jesus Christ?
So, going to church service on God's Sabbath is how we learn to do the good works of God for all humanity. But it is a Christian's responsibility to go out from those services and do what they've learned from God.

To be a true follower of God you would be worshiping on Saturday instead of Sunday. On Sunday you could do the charitable work and please God.
