The 741 was developed by National Semiconductor. When any IC designer came up with a new design, the next number in their series of numbers was assigned to the project.

When National Semi engineer/designer Dave Fullagar (the developer of the 741 op amp) was assigned to the project, he went to the configuration manager and was assigned the next open number in the list : 741.

That's about all there is to it -- it was the next number on the list of IC numbers to be assigned.

Little did Mr. Fullager know at the time, how famous that number would become.

tlbs101 has it right, the answer below him is incorrectly assigning the '741 opamp to the ttl family - there is no relation between a 741 and 74-series logic, just a coincidence in the first 2 digits. All 74-series chips have at least 2 digits after the 74, such as 7400. Corresponding to the 74- series are the 74S-series, 74LS-series, 74C series, and a few others. For example, the corresponding chip to the 7400 in the 74LS-series is the 74LS00.
