Well, the definition of a martini has been blurred a bit in the last couple decades, as many foo-foo version of so called martini's have popped up. Now a days anything served in a martini glass, is called a martini.
Traditionally a martini is gin mixed with a small amount of dry vermouth, shaken in a mixing tin with ice, then strained into a martini glass. The perfect martini is shaken about 20 times vigorously, and with gin if you can shake it in a slightly circular motion it will help to bring out the botanticals in the alcohol without "bruising" the alcohol and destroying the flavor. The perfect martini should come out of the shaker with a thin ice crystal layer over the top and a slightly greyish haze because of the chilling.
Vodka is often used in martini's and is also accepted as a traditional martini.
The dirty martini has become very popular with those who like the trendy idea of drinking martini's, but not the flavor of straight alcohol. It is made by adding a small amount of olive juice to the martini.

Depending on the type it will vary. But a Martini is a lot of booze and a drop of Vermouth. A basic martini is 2 oz. of Gin and a breath of Dry Vermouth mixed with ice and strained into a Martini Glass. Vodka, Apple Brandy etc can be used. There are thousands of different ways to make a Martini. Be careful when drinking Martinis. 3 or 4 will make you very drunk in a short amount of time. It is a drink that is best drank very slowly. Sipped. Savor the flavor and drink only one.

Get some vermouth and rinse the inside of a glass with it. Fill the glass with Grey Goose vodka or Bombay Sapphire gin. Put in one cocktail olive. Any more vermouth is for people who don't really know a good martini. Only use a high quality vodka or gin. Use anything else and it's not a martini it's a sissy drink.

A martini is three parts *distilled* gin, and one part dry vermouth, shaken with crushed ice, and strained into a chilled martini glass, garnished with with a green stuffed olive stabbed with a toothpick
The toothpick is optional. So is the olive, for that matter. Any other variation, and it's not really a martini.

A REAL classic martini is gin and vermouth, shaken or stirred over ice and strained into a cocktail glass. The proportions are:
Martini - 3 parts gin, 1 part dry vermouth.
Dry martini - 5 parts gin, 1 part dry vermouth.
Extra dry martini - 7 parts gin, 1 part dry vermouth.

a martini is made with either vodka or gin and vermouth....you can get a "dirty martini" which has olive juice in it as well, a martini with a "twist" a lemon/lime sliver....you can get a martini "on the rocks"(on ice) or "up" (no ice).....there are different kinds of martinis...cosmopolitans (made with vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice) are my favorite
