My parents were given a 10 week old Boston Terrier pup, male. They got him last Tuesday. They noticed that he bled a few drops at the end of his poops, bright red drops. He also has been defecating ALOT. He is eating Purina One puppy food, I think. The guy who gave it to them swears he was fine and even checked out OK at the vets when he got his shots. ANY IDEAS what might be wrong with him? Other than that, he is frisky and happy and plays, they say. They are calling his old vet on Monday, but I wanted to ask yall what you think!
PLEASE give me your opinion!
THANKS

Sometimes dogs that have worms or protozoal intestinal parasites will have bloody stools or even bloody diarrhea. Since he's acting fine otherwise, it probably isn't too serious yet. Just keep plenty of fluids available for him to drink and get a vet appt. as soon as possible.

You mentioned the type of food he's on. Is it the same food the person who had him before was giving him? If not, that could be the problem. Dogs often get intestinal problems when you switch their foods too quickly. You should always mix the new and old foods, starting with just a little of the new and mostly old, then going GRADUALLY to mostly new and a little old, and finally to all new. This should take at least a week to do properly.

For lots of other good information on Bostons, visit the Boston Terrier Club of America website. He sounds like he is straining himself when he defecates and has a tear inside of his anus because of it. The bright red blood indicates that it is new blood, blood that is close to the surface of the skin and that is a better sign than dark red blood would be.

Your parents could try putting him on a softer diet, if he is eating dry food, switch to wet or even moisten the dry food with a bit of warm water or mineral oil (a spoonful) so that it will be a bit easier for him to pass it.

Since he is frisky and happy and playing, he is most likely going to be fine. My family and I have a Pom, and because her system is so small we have to make sure that she has moist or moistened food and put mineral oil in her food several times per week per order of our/her vet to make sure she is not straining to go.

Bostons Terriers are great, friends of mine had one when I was growing up and I spent many hours playing with him, he was a bundle of energy and I loved doggy sitting him.

I am not a vet, but have owned dogs, and dealt with dogs for years and years. One of my best friends families raised Bostons for show dogs, and she has talked about this happening to several of their dogs over the years due to straining to defecate.

Best of luck with the new pup, he sounds like a sweetie.

I understand your concern to know right away. Blood is very serious and the sooner a vet sees him the better. Bright red blood is new bleeding so whatever it is is currently bleeding.

I highly suggest, if he is behaving well, full of energy, eating and drinking well, that you make sure he has plenty of fresh water constantly. If he begins to act sleepy and sluggish or if you notice he is not eating well, get him to an emergency center or a vet immediately. He definately needs to see the vet asap though.

At that age, diseases could kill him quickly if not treated.

If the blood is bright red then its a bleed. He probably has a fissure. When he strains to go it creates a little tear in the anus causing bright red blood. Don't take my word for it though. Still take him to the vet as soon as you can.

he may be straining when he deficates and that would do it ...he does need to see a vet and take a fresh fecal sample to be tested when you go for the appointment.
