send them a cease desist letter...
most companies have a 'return address' to see if you forwarded your mail to a new address. then they just send the info to the new address.
if it isnt on the credit report then they couldnt have found it on it. you wont need to pay them back....if you pay them back they can report you back on the credit report.

Negatives CAN NOT be re-aged or put back on your credit report, even if you pay them.

The collection agency bought up some very old bad debt and is beating the bushes trying to scrounge some payment. Send them a cease and desist letter. They won't bother taking your to court, expecially if you point out that the debt is beyond the statute of limitations.

The will probably sell the debt off to another collection agency. So you may have to send another cease and desist letter.

The statutes of limitations are usually around 7-10 years depending on what state you live in. This debt has been sold off to a collections company. DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE DEBT or they can put it back on your credit report. Send a generic, certified letter saying that you don't know anything about the debt and that it is not yours and not to bother you again.

If they sell off the debt to another company, you will have to go through the process again.

Below is a site that gives the statutes of limitations for each state. Good luck, you should be fine.
