I'm so annoyed with my cat. He only started doing this recently too. He will not drink water unless it's fresh and it's in a martini glass (I swear to God). I think he likes the martini glass because it's propped up a little bit higher than his regular water bowl, and because it's tapered so that he can drink every last drop as easily as the first. The thing is that he won't drink from either bowl (the water bowl on the floor by the food bowl) or the martini water glass unless it's fresh, and ice cold (from my Brita filter container that I keep in the fridge). If it sits there for more than half a day I'll catch him drinking water from the toilet instead, which is disgusting because I sleep next to him at night and I don't want to sleep next something that smells like something I got rid of earlier that day, if you know what I mean. In general I keep the toilet seat closed, and when he can't get to that water he'll whine and whine and cry until I give him new water. Advice?

Oh and how often should I change his water? I certainly wouldn't want to drink water that's been sitting around for a day or two but is there any reason for this other than him being spoiled? I just want to treat him well (I just recently moved out of my parents house to my own apartment) and I want to make sure I continue to raise him to be healthy and happy.

My toilet IS clean but it's an apartment toilet so a lot of times after I flush it stuff will get backwashed into the bottem of the bowl.

My cat likes to drink from a cup. She'll drink from her CatIt fountain (which is sort of a dome over which water flows), but when my boyfriend is around, she prefers the mug. Or a tumbler.
I keep my toilet lid closed to ensure she doesn't drink from the toilet, and luckily she's never gotten into that habit.
Maybe you could get one of those fountains for your cat and prop it up to the height he seems to like. There are a number of models, one of which your furbaby should like.

LOL, Cat's have more sense than humans. They are very finicky and very, very, clean animals.
They love fresh, cool, water all day long. The best thing is to give him fresh water at least every 2 hours, if possible or leave the toilet seat up and he can get his fresh water that way. Make sure there are no chemicals in your toilet water. Cats drink from the toilet because it's cool tasting to them. KEEP YOUR TOILET CLEAN AND IT WON'T BE DISGUSTING!

I have the same problem with my dog. She will go forever w/out drinking if you left just a bowl out.
I have never offered her a martini glass but that would be right up her alley. She will only drink out of a running faucet- the bath tub. She sits in front of the bathroom and cries until someone turns it on.
I got her one of the circulating, filtered water fountain bowls- she won't use it. I don't think she has used it since Christmas.
I hope you have better luck with one.

Cats are known to prefer water that is fresh and hasn't had much time to sit around and collect dust. As for the martini glass, I have no advice for that. That is just kind of bizarre. Anyways, here is my advice. In my family, we have 4 cats. We have this contraption that dispenses water as it is needed. It's almost like one of those water dispensers you find in doctors offices or hotel lobbies. Where you have those cone paper cups and hold down the lever. Obviously, the cats don't use cups or hold down levers.
It's hard to explain, so here's a picture:

^This is actually the same exact thing my family has. there is one for water and one for food. Here is another option:

^This one is alot more expensive, but the main point is that it keeps a contineous flow of fresh water.

My cat does the comparable element. nicely, virtually. She is likewise a 12 months previous, and he or she does use her water bowl. whether, she consistently paws on the floor and placemat. each and every so often she spills her water additionally. She additionally paws on the floor, appropriate after ingesting or ingesting something. I don;t comprehend it, the two, yet I certainly have been instructed that it extremely is favourite. So relax effortless. there is not any rationalization for it, whether it is common.

they may be a little spendy but they really do keep the water a lot fresher by keeping it moving. cats dont like water that is still and just sitting there. i currently dont have one but have known a lot of people that bought one and their cat loved it. also put this in a different room as the food. cats like to hunt out their water. my cats wont drink their water from their dish (we have attached water and food bowls) so they go and drink from the dogs dish. but seriously invest in one

Being that your cat is closer to being a wild animal than we are. I belive that his instincts are more insightful than you or I. Your cat seems to be very practical. Give him what he wants but you should also follow suit. If your cat wont drink you shouldn't drink it.
