its not the attitude of God, its the attitude of organised religion, born out of human greed and arrogance. lets just say hypothetically, that God exist and that he sent Jesus to earth to show man the way of the father and free man of sin; that message has been lost over the last two millennium. Jesus dieing on the cross for mans sins, kicked of the biggest sin of all, GREED AND POWER, power corrupts and once the Catholic church gained power through Constantine, greed took over. they even had the arrogance to claim a right over the fallen Roman empire and coronated their own Emperor, Charlemagne(800) , this gave them more power and the Papacy claimed the rights over everones souls and created the Kingdom of Christendom, they held themselves above Kings. they frightened the public into submission of their word by not letting any but the priest read the bible, which was written in Latin, only the most wealthy and most educated could read Latin, the layen had no knowledge of the true bible until John Wyclif translated it as part of the Lombard resistance. the true meaning for their behaviour is to keep the public in the dark over the churches real motives, subjugation. making the lies of the church a reality by keeping the mysticism of the bible to themselves, they were reveared for the miracle of the Eucharist, of transubstantiation, the turning of wine into the ACTUAL blood of God ( even Jesus at the last supper told them to drink the wine in memory of him, Consubstatiation) lies to make you believe that the church was actually the successor to St Peter. the biggest con of the church was Purgatory, they used the fear of purgatory to raise money for the church from poor saps who would leave alll their money to the chantries to pray for less time purging thier sins. organised religion teaches to hate those that are not of thier kind, so as to keep control of the weak minded. in the 21st C I find it hard to believe that anyone can fall for this ****. All christian religions are based on Catholicism, they just branch off, when they disagree with the one of the church doctrine's, though they are fundamentally the same, they condemn eachother and it is that point which will keep the reall truth from ever becoming clear in the minds of their followers. Jesus didn't die for mankinds sin, it caused it.

Hel, that is the correct spelling, is actually from the Norse religion, my religion. It is a barren dark wasteland ruled over by Hela.
The attitude you speak of is arrogant but stems from the church teachings. I was brought up a catholic then converted to church of england. I found the attitude towards people of other faiths could be quite hostile with some people, thankfully there are open minded xtians out there and I am friends with many. I think it is of human origin and a way to scare people into believing, when given the choice between eternal damnation or heaven then there is no contest. The church should instead be promoting the positive instead of focusing on the negative. It is sad when mankind warps things for their own end.

If you die with the knowledge that you could have save your own soul by a simple act of contrition, then I guess so. The gift is free, the price has been paid. How hard is it to accept that someone could love you so much that they would lay down their life for you? Or do you believe you are not deserving of such forgiveness? Anyone can have this. It doesn't mean that all your problems will be solved or that you will get sent to Africa in the mission field, it just means that you don't have to be alone to carry the load. When human nature fails you, it is really good to have a back-up.

It obviously is not the attitude of a loving God. And it was not the attitude of the early church fathers. It is sadly the attitude of a minority of rather unpleasant people who have hijacked Christianity and turned their version of it into an exclusive club, where you are only acceptable if you think and do exactly as they say you should.

A few of my housemates are very religious, the frequently express actual distress at the assumption that I'm going to hell for being an atheist. They're also perpetually surprised that I'm a really nice, intelligent guy.
But yes, christians genuinely believe that god won't let non-christians into heaven. However, they fail to recognise this as a punishment for disobedience... Which it clearly is.

It is actually the attitude of their 'loving' God. However good or kind you may be to others, you will still go to Hell if you don't believe in him.
Sounds a nasty piece of work if you ask me. And would you really want to go to a place full of Christians?
Hell for me. Bring it on!

That attitude is a manipulative power grab. It says in effect, only my way is correct, and if you don't do it my way, you will be punished for eternity. Those who except such tricky reasoning give all their power away to someone who claims to have a direct channel to God. This ignores the fact that we ALL have direct channels to God. That is what Martin Luther was saying when he started the Protestant Reformation.
Just look - the Muslims say if you are not Muslim, you are an infidel, and we kill infidels. The Christians and Jews say pretty much the same thing - believe my way or you die.
But you are correct in knowing God as a kind and loving Father to all manking. With one Father, we are all brothers.
And no one goes to hell

The christian religion was not invented by christ, but by the members of the council of nicea, for the purpose of social control. If you read and interpret the Scriptures yourself, you will find the Divine exists within yourself and not in a church.

Well, at least, if you're not a Christian your account will be deleted on Yahoo Answers.
Leaving aside for the moment the fundamental question of whether the Christian Heaven and Hell are "real," it may at least be admitted that the belief in them has historically proved to be well suited to both the "masters" in Church bureaucracies, for efficient bribes and threats that cost them nothing, and to the "slaves" in their flocks to gratify (equally without expense) their hopes of emancipation and revenge and reward for their subservience.
