Because you cannot see what's coming at you on the other side of the doorway, and it makes sense to be prepared to stop or change direction quickly.
It's the same theory as approaching a blind intersection in your car.

When I walk through a doorway, I slow down so aspects of my environment can sink in. I automatically know what's going on with people and things, but it takes a moment for it to register.

That annoys me to. When I get near a doorway I just start running and don't stop untill I'm through it.

lets think about this... do you know what is going on the other side of the door? are you able to see through the door and see what is behind it? like i tell my son.. think about the question... put yourself in the situation and see if u can come up with an answer.. if u can't.. then ask.
people slow down cuz there maybe a battery of things that could be going on the other side that they dont know about.. plus .. going into the unknown,, people get hesitant.. understand?

.....same as everyone else said..... but also, I have a tendency to think there might be a clean clear glass door I may bang into, depending on the type of entrance. I like to put my hand forward to feel for clearance.
