My 16 month old has a runny nose and nothing he takes will clear it up. IT starts out clear and then gets yellow/green. I have literally tried everything I can think of. Antibiotics, several different antihistamines. Any suggestions?

It sounds crazy but it really works. Just take some warm water with a small amount of salt in it. Put his head on your lap a little upside down and use a dropper to put it up his nose. He should sneeze a lot of it out. It will help the swelling go down and clear up the snot. I don't know how it works exactly but it does. Do it several times a day and good luck!

My sister (mom of 5) knew exactly what to do when her kids had this problem, she reduced the amount of diary for about a week and increased their water and juice intake. It worked! Running noses gone. Also, your child may be slightly lactose intolerant, so cut back on dairy products and then slowly add them back a week at a time. That way you'll find out if a particular dairy product is causing the problem. Also, when they are teething, especially with molars, runny noses can be a constant issue. Again, try giving him more fluids to help flush his system. His first drink in the morning when he wakes up should be water, its good for his body.

Holy crap why are you getting him antibiotics for a runny nose? and WHO the HELL is prescribing them? Stop the freaking train. You have no idea what those things do to kids. I do, I was on them for years after being seriously infected. They leave you with NO immune system. The things that KILL the infection in your body are susceptible to the antibiotics as well as the infection itself. Your body has to rally back from the use of antibiotics, and the more often you use them the harder it is.

Get a new freaking doctor.

Iam going to venture to say that if he's had an endless runny nose that ends up infected its because he's teething.

You should get him outside and keep him busy and hydrated and let his body regulate itself.

A nasal aspirator and some REGULAR saline solution can help keep him flushed out so it doesnt have time to sit and grow bacteria. Otherwise, let him alone for a little while with it., just keep him sucked out with the bulb.

When a child is that young, there is really nothing you can do. Sad, I know. I always felt bad when my little one was sick. You shouldn't be giving him antibiotics or antihistamines unless doctor prescribed. The over the counter remedies don't really work, they just stop it momentarily then it starts where it left off. The best thing to do is just leave it alone, it will clear up on its own eventually. Just make sure he's happy, honestly, it's bothering you more than him!

The best thing you can do is get some little noses saline spray and one of those nose sucker bulb things. When you notice his nose running, lie him on your lap and put a few drops in one nostril. Wait a few seconds and suck out whatever you can get out. Then do the other side. You can do this as many times a day that you think he needs it. Especially before bed, so it doesn't drain into his throat while he's sleeping. It will help keep it from being swallowed or draining into his chest.

Baby Sudafed helps to just clear up regular runny noses. However, if it's long lasting it sounds like it might be allergies. Take him to the pediatrician and see if she wants to refer you to an allergist. They can do blood tests (instead of a skin test) on young kids to see what they are or aren't allergic to. Other than that, good luck. I know Clarinex helped my son for a while, and then singulair, but pretty much if you've got a "snotty" kid, that's just the way he is.

i know exactly how you feel. my daughter is 18 months and her little nose is runny all the time!!!! it aggravates me. i know her pediatrician prescribed her an allergy medicine. have you tried any allergy medicine like zyrtec? or singulair? zyrtec comes in liquid form and the singulair comes in powder form. it was hard for me to keep my daughter on it. so i really don't know. i didn't follow through and i should have. it was hard because i work full time and she's in her grandmother's care. of course her grandmothers goes against my wishes and doesn't follow through with anything. so i hope you the best of luck... and i agree with your comment. some people on here are real jerks. good luck. you know what answers you're looking for. so ignore the ones who do not help. and plus maybe they don't have kids? i don't know. :) hope you find a solution. and if you do, let me know. lol...
