Commit to a few sleepless nights and stand watch. When the creep appears, be ready to follow him back to his lair, or at least his vehicle. Take pictures and videos also.

Harbor Freight sells a security camera that can be plugged into a TV/VCR. I don't know how great the picture will be since it is a low cost camera, but it's a start.

Having lived in Detroit most of my life and knowing there is NO support from the DPD, I know what you are going through.
Good Luck

Talk to the police before you spends thousands on home surveillance. You could form a neighboorhood watch. Hide out in your bushes with a camcorder. Sorry, I had to put in the police answer, thats what I do.

Just out of curiosity - when you catch these guys, what do you plan to do? Besides call the cops? Oh, I forgot, you already said you wont do that. Are you going to yell and scream? Maybe throw stuff at them? Scratch thier eyes out? Face it, you can't handle it alone, you don't even know who they are or how to catch them.

You know, if you were to park the car real close to a chain link fence and run a 220 volt line out to the car and clamp one end of the wire to the car and the other to the fence, the burglar would have to skinny between the car and the fence to get in, and when he made contact with both, you'd catch your thief.
