How about a dvd he might like for years(spiderman, animated shows like Thundercats or Transformers) Action figures are always good for a boy, we gave my daughter her 1rst portable cd player and some kids cds at 5. My daughter is 6 today and we got her clothes and a computer game.

Get something that uses brainpower or is creative. How about paints, a coloring book and crayons? How about Curious George? Dr Seuss? Berenstain Bears?
If there is a Discovery Store nearby, you can check with them for age-appropriate ways to expand the mind...

Take him to the zoo? Some kids who have everything, benefit from expiriences.
Or, I know several five year old boys who enjoy dressing up like superheroes. :-)
