Is the tape completely shot or do I have a chance of salvaging it? The film went all the way into the actual reels.

Send it to me, I can probably get the video from it. I've done this before with broken mini-dvs. I can capture the video from the vhs and make a dvd from it. $25-35 plus shippping depending on how hard it is for me to salvage.

vhs shells are easily repaired or replaced. your tape should be ok to play once mounted in the shell again. i used to do this for broadcast news people. my guess is a camera shop has a repair person that can handle this.
