All of my army buddies thought that I was nuts. I would apply a thin coat of rubbing alcohol to my boots and set them on fire. What that does is strip off the shoddy factory finish and dye. Then I would apply a few thick coats of good quality black dye. When that was dried, I would start applying the black polish with a spit shine rag and water. By doing that, my boots looked better than their patent leather low quarters. It's a long and tedious job, and you'd better have another pair of boots to wear in the mean time. But it's worth the effort.
I actually made a good deal of money in AIT doing this for others. I had neither the time or energy to do it in Basic.

Scuff or gouge the toe area. When I was in, the fastest way to piss someone off was to scuff the toe or heel of the boot. All that time spent on the spit shine was out the window. Tho boot never looked the same afterward.

I have found 2 ways...
1-cow $hit (if you work on a farm, it destroys leather...ironic...)
2-by scrubbing the floors in your squad bay at Parris Island, SC (now why did the DI's have us do that?)
Otherwise, they are pretty tough. put a leather conditioner on them regularly to avoid cracking. Just b4 I got out, they changed to the tan suede boot, and I haven't been able to destroy them yet, but I have yet to find a place that does decent re-soleing job.

My answer is a little different. (I was Navy!) Salt water is hard-core corrosive to the boots. It eats away at them and turns them WHITE!

Only queers worry about whether their boots have that patent leather look that women like to wear! You should be thinking about more important things like what will you do if you survive and get back home again! Do you still want your boots to have that certain untouched look now?
