i wear glasses and take chemistry. i often have to wear safety goggles in class, but when i wear them over my glasses, they feel so uncomfortable (not to mention they look ridiculous). i'm not so sure i want contacts because of the risk of infection and costs. what should i do?

There are things that happen in chemistry that are, well, sort of unexpected. Like...explosions. NOT your explosion, but the guy across the lab table or next to you. The glass beaker explodes...glass (hot glass with acid in it) goes flying across the room.

Do you know where it's going to land? Yep...YOUR EYE.

Or someone decides they want to see what a little bit os sodium metal would do in a beaker of water. OUCH! Ever seen water burn? OK it's not the water...but if it pops and blows a little bit of sodium metal out and it lands in your eye...it'll just keep on going..into your eye. INTO your eye.

this will give you an idea of what kind of glasses you might want. I can tell you this, some people wear head shields in chemistry labs. Covers the whole face! And have safety glasses on under that and regular glasses under that!

A nice blast injury to your face with lots of little pock marks from the little tiny glass pieces...looks ridiculous too.

Then stick with the glasses... If you not up to getting contacts.. You only get an infection if you don't take care of them properly or handle them with dirty hands... As far as cost I've heard that walmart has good specials on vision test and you can order contacts through the internet... good luck

See if you can find some safety goggles that fit comfortably over your glasses. (They are available!) Look for them in hardware or building supply stores, and be sure to try them on before you buy them. Then you can just leave them at school in your locker and take them into your chem labs.
