there's a new movie out about the Mountain Meadows Massacre, called September Dawn. i'm just curious if any Mormons are going to keep an open mind and watch the movie, portraying an important event in American and Mormon history?

Pyebwa...i'm sorry, i wasn't implying that NOT watching the movie would make you NOT have an open mind. maybe i worded my question poorly. i was just wondering if Mormons would keep an open mind to this particular movie, likely made by a non-Mormon. i just phrased the question kinda wrong. i didn't mean to imply anything else. please accept my apologies.

I love the logic here. To keep an open mind is to watch the movie. To have a closed mind is to not watch the movie. What if I am Mormon and have already read heaps on the Mountain Meadows Massacre? What if I know what happened is tragic and I realize, oh my goodness, there are humans in the LDS church--people who make horrible mistakes just like people have in other religions? Why do I need to financially support a film that has gotten horrific reviews for quality alone and that most critics in online newspapers agree portrayed the Mormons in an unnaturally demonic way, such as nations do to the enemy at wartime?

Maybe if the director had tried to present this tragedy in a more balanced and historically accurate way and if the film work were not so infamously shoddy, I would give it the time of day.

As a Mormon, I do not need to be coddled in the worldview of my church all the time. I can look at the warts in our history and can be saddened by it. I am not afraid of fact, but that doesn't mean I have to line up to view a poorly made hatchet job.

REPLY to Kelly Kapowski: No worries. I don't get offended easily. Having grown up among Mormons, I don't believe that so many crazy fanatics could produce as many good-spirited, level-headed people as have influenced me in my church environment. I just think it is a shame that an atrocity such as this gets to overshadow all the good the LDS church has done that was also "committed" in the name of their religion. It's not so much that the movie was made that bothers me (history has a right to be known), but that it painted past Mormons in such an ugly way. I'm not even active in the church right now for personal reasons, but am compelled to defend it because I know how hard the Mormons, generally, try to do good to each other and to neighbors not of the faith.

The Critics have "Pan"-ed it because it was poorly made.

NEW YORK POST = Zero Stars

BOSTON GLOBE = "True believers probably won't like it, but the sins here are more against good film-making than religion."

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER = C+

I have read the script and have no love for it -- it is hardly history. It's a drama based on a real story of a horrible massacre.

The movie says (strongly implies) that Brigham Young definitely ordered it and there is NO evidence of that. People can cry cover-up but there is no evidence.

I was upset about the movie at first but then I remembered liking Da Vinci Code and how that infuriated my mother-in-law (she's evangelical) -- she said that Da Vinci Code would pollute the minds of people against the true Savior and I told her to chill and that people who want to believe in Jesus still will and people who want to say that Jesus was just another man will still believe that he was just a man. Those who point to Da Vinci Code for their proof are just looking for excuses.

Same with the ridiculous September Dawn -- anyone who points to this movie or story to prove the LDS church false is only looking for justification to say that the LDS church is false, because they already feel that way.

This movie will die of it's own weight.

The trailer usually has the best clips from the movie. If that is the case, I won't bother. I have an open mind, but the movie appeals to those who have already decided. I haven't seen any independent film critic say anything favorable about it. I didn't see Brokeback Mountain, because I had no interest, but at least I read plenty of positive reviews.

I wonder if a former Japanese of my generation would watch a John Wayne movie comfortably. How do the Brits view "The Patriot"? What to the Russians think of James Bond?

'September Dawn' probably has an agenda, and I think it's timing is definitely politically motivated. Bro Romney will most likely need to spend more time commenting about the film instead of how he intends to fix illegal immigration and Social Security.

didnt know it was even on. Im Lds, and Ill probally watch it.

Maybe they should also include how many times "mormons" were murdered and driven out of their homes. Not to mention the extermination order issued by gov boggs.

Although its funny how everything a mormon does is always refered to as Gale Davis, a mormon, robbed a bank." if gale was an atheist, Catholic, or whatever it never is mentioned.

I've studied the subject and if possible I will watch it. Mormons are more likely to accept the truth of history more then mainstream christians, whose past is covered in Blood 1000 times worse then Mormons.

We have one bad spot on in our history, mainstream Christians are responsible for countless acts of MURDER, and RAPE in the name of a God who has no idea what it is like to live a mortal life or even have a physical body.

When I first heard about it, I was planning on seeing it. Then I found out it was rated R. From what I've heard, it looks like I made the right choice.
