I have a mile race in 4 weeks time, never done a race that short. Done many 5kms this year best time this year - 26:31. So maybe 7 minutes is too much to ask, its more of a long term goal. 8 minutes is do-able.
any tips

You are close to an 8 minute mile now. The mile race is shorter than your usual, so it should be a bit easier to run. Your best bet is to do some "spped" work, as in wind sprints. Get used to a faster pace.

My boss runs in races and he used to be smoker. He told me his long story ... I will leave out bulk of details but short version for you. Since you are building muscle. conditioning those muscles will help you to get better time. Take your mile at regular pace but sprint last 1/4 mile. You will find your time increases in short while. good luck James

I have found that when I train for a race I traing for longer distances and add in sprint work my times get better. If you run 5 k's then you should be able to push yourself harder for 1 mi.

the only way to race fast is to train fast! mabey go to the track and run fast around it once all out but still comfrotable then jog is around once and then all out again this will help speed. also a good way is to do some light strength traing on your legs to increase you inderance and increase speed...ANOTHER way to increase speed is to run at your traing pace but the last 5 miniutes of you run run a bit faster. so at the end of the race you will be able to pass everyone...

Do a lot of wind sprints, try to cut your time 15 minutes each week. Stay hydrated and empty your stomach real well. You will do just fine.
