I am not Catholic, so I am only making a guess. I believe that it was Peter who was hung upside down because he was not worthy of dying the same way Christ did. It could be to remember that.
This is just a guess, however.

Inverted Cross. How do you do that, make the top arm longer than the bottom?
Is that still not a cross?
Several years ago after an altercation when I was attacked by an atheist because of my religion I was put in a jail cell with a convicted murderer. The man had an upside down crucifix tattooed on his chest.
After some discussion, and a re-evaluation of how easy it was (supposed to be) to push Christians around, the man explained to me that the crucifix was right-side up when he looked at it.
We parted on good terms and the police released me without charges.
This taught me something very valuable. You may very well think something is upside down. It all depends on the perspective.

Maybe it's a plaque that has turned upside time with the shifting of the building. There's certainly no theological reason for it, if it truly is a Catholic church.
I like Greenwood's idea. Peter was crucified upside down and the Catholics think he was the first pope. (Let's not go there). It could be that I suppose.

Why didn't you ask directly from the priest of the church?
There are alot of churches in the world. You didn't even mention the location.
What do think is it about inverted cross?
Saint Peter was crucified up side down.

There is a legend that Peter was fleeing his Crucifixion. On the way he met Christ going in the opposite direction. Peter asked him where he was going. Supposedly he answered to be crucified in his place. Peter repented and returned to be crucified. He said he didn't deserve to die like his Savior and requested to be crucified upside down. The upside down cross is supposed to be Peter's Cross.
In witchcraft an upside down cross or an upside down cross with the arms broken is supposed to be a symbol of a covenant with the devil and refusing the work of the cross.

If the church is the house of God and Jesus Christ is Lord why would any person put the cross upside down even if Peter was crucified up-side-down. The church belongs to Christ, not Peter. Christ was not crucified up-side-down and churches are the houses of God. People are the temple of God because the Holy Spirit lives inside of us.
No wonder God says that Judgment begins in the house of God.

that cross has nothing to do with actual faith... before this time period people in bible time used that cross as a disrespectful "odor" to god. The Isrealites used it as a phallic symbol and stuck it up in the sky towards "heaven" as it were and towards God as well God wanted them to stop it and this is the actual way the phallus is represented not like the regular cross on most churches that still represents a phallus

Is the church named after St. Peter? If so, that would explain it, because St. Peter was crucified upside down. He chose it this way because he didn't feel worthy to be crucified in the same manner as Jesus.

I don't know...what's the name of the church? Is it named after one of the apostles who was crucified that way? Need more details, I think, to figure this out.

It could be something happened in that church and it was deconsecrated. Inverted cross it's never a good sign. U should look into the history of that church and see if something happened.
