The Christian Scriptures do not mention tattoos, but the Jewish Mosaic Law prohibited a true worshipper from getting one. For this reason alone, many Christians conscientiously object to getting tattooed.

Jehovah's Witnesses do not believe the bible to teach that getting a tattoo is a serious sin. However, a Christian who hopes to qualify for privileges in his congregation does not get a tattoo or permit his family to get one. If a Christian already has a tattoo, he recognizes the importance of working to minimize the appearance and distraction from his tattoos.

(1 Corinthians 9:19-23) For, though I am free from all persons, I have made myself the slave to all, that I may gain the most persons. And so to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain Jews; ...I have become all things to people of all sorts, that I might by all means save some. But I do all things for the sake of the good news, that I may become a sharer of it with others.

It is not looked upon with favor. I am an x-JW, been with them over 40 yrs, and at one time it was very taboo, but then they have eased up ,and say it is a conscience matter. But then they will site scriptures like "Your body is a temple. . . "
"Don't defile your body!" things like that. So the majority of the elders would look at those and say NOT to do it. But really it is up to you.
I have 2 tattoo's. And i will be getting more work done. Good luck to you!

NO ...Yet another scripture taken out of context......If you can not tattoo, you should also wear no clothing that has a print, or any kind of jewelry.

The scripture that calls early isrealites to avoid tattoos, also calls them to be completely without adornment.

/wouldn't it be interesting if the JW's kept all old Jewish law..instead of picking and choosing what to use and what to throw out?

physically, yes, they can get a tattoo. but if they were to get one like after they were baptized, they would get "disfellowshiped"... aka kicked out. They are totally looked down upon, just like smoking, drinking in excess, getting facial piercings, etc.
Their reasoning, other than not desecrating the temple that is your body, is that you don't want to give the wrong impression to those on the outside.
