Recently we obtained a new parakeet friend to join our other 4 making it 5 (we have seveal other birds conures, paroletts, cockatoo). Anyhow it is a true albino parakeet which I have looked for yrs for, even has the pink eyes. My question might seem dumb but do you think the sun hurts his eyes? I once had an albino horse and someone told me the sun was painful to his eyes (I dont know if this is true or not). This bird was vet checked and is not ill, its hand tamed, eats, drinks, climbs the cage. However alot of the time during the day its eyes have been closed or it goes to the bottom of the cage. Also the other 4 have basically shunned it to oblivia is this normal just part of the "pecking order" until they are ready to allow him into their "flock". Its been awhile since I introduced a new bird to them so Ive forgetten can you refresh my memory pls.

Thanks

I have a female Albino budgie with the red eyes and she is fine with the light, no problems at all. It takes time for the bird to be accepted by the others, just keep watching out for signs of them ganging up and pecking. If that happens, you will have to separate your budgie. Keep it near the others and then try again later, if it still gets harrassed you may have to keep it separate permanently.

Well, i just recently got a parakeet too, and I did a lot of research on it...i believe that the other birds just need some time to get used to the new addition to the flocks..but if after a couple weeks he's not happy etc. then you should talk to the vet about it and his behaviors lately.hope this helps you

I don't really think so, my parakeets LOVE to mess around on the bottom of the cage, but if you are genuinely worried, find a good avian vet to check it out for you. When my parakeet Raspberry ( AKA Razzie) was dieing of cancer, the regular vet told me that she just had a vitamin deficiency! I got the cancer diagnosis from a speciality avian vet. On the pecking order subject, my parakeet Perth shunned the newer parakeet Tin-Tin for a LONG time, so no worries!!!!!!!!!

Hmm, seems your bird is severly albino. I would avoid pink eyed animals. I have one albino budgie but he has black eyes.

Your bird is more sensitive to the sun because he has no melanin (pigment) to protect his eyes. Its like shining a very bright light into our eyes, is how he feels.

They could be shunning him because he is new, or because he is white (little racists, haha) If they are not used to seeing white birds they may not like him. See how it goes, if they keep picking on him you may have to separate him.

Good luck
