Once I forgot to turn my cellphone off before takeoff! About three hours into the flight I realized what I forgot to do, and turned it off... but before turning it off, I noticed that there wasn't any signal.

Even though you are not calling, as long as the phone is on, it still sends out signals which will interfere the flight instruments.

I have seen an official report in China about a plane tried to land in Guangzhou airport in stormy weather. The visibility was very low and the pilot decided to land by instruments. However he could not set the instruments right, after several attempts, he asked the flight attendants to check around the cabin. Surely there were two guy calling their cell phones. Once they turned the phones off, everything went back normal, and the plane landed safely.

There will be no cell phone signal up there. When the aircraft is "low" enough just before landing, then your signal returns. however, it is not advised that you make a call while the aircraft is landing (or taking-off)

You will be reminded to turn it off during take offs and landings...as well as all other electronic devices as it "might" interfere with the navigational equipment of the aircraft. however, it is more logical to say that during take offs and landings, your full attention is needed because it is the most crucial and dangerous part of your flight. Anything can happen during take-offs and landings...an evacuation might just happen anytime. Also, your cabin attendants will require you to stow your tray tables and your seat back in the upright to ensure that nothing will obstruct the passenger seated by the window should an evacuation is necessary. You wouldn't want a laptop flying on your face on a hard landing.

I've never used my cellphone on a plane but I did accidentally leave it turned on once. Fell asleep as soon as I was seated and didn't realize that it was turned on until we landed and I went to use it.

Made me realize that the cellphone rule is just crap. Obviously my phone being on didn't interfere with any navigational systems and we didn't crash. I've always suspected it was safe and that they just don't want people talking on cellphones throughout flights, which might not be a bad thing.

I was traveling from Denver to Las VEgas. I pulled it out and turned it on.
Wow it was just when the time was chaning. so the clock actually changed by one hour when I did this.
Then I turned it off and put it away so I would not get in trouble.
Also, the phone got a signal at 35,000 feet. that was amazing.

First, you ought to recollect that the undertaking isn't employing "A cellular telephone" on a airplane - if cellular utilization is permitted there may well be thousands of telephones in use on a great length airliner. there is a few undertaking they could intervene with plane systems, specifically by using fact there may well be no thank you to attempt plane systems with each and every mix of contraptions that must be in use now, or sooner or later. in spite of all of that, the ban on cellular telephone utilization is issued by employing the FCC (Federal verbal exchange fee), no longer the FAA (Federal Aviation administration) to guard the cellar community. cellular telephone towers are no longer each and every of the comparable. They very in skill in line with envisioned utilization - in a rural section their connection to the telephone community may well be a million or 2 T1 lines, with 24 voice channels each and every. Now image a string of cellular towers put in place to furnish assurance alongside a highway in West Virgina. on account that reception is line of internet site, assurance would not be very huge by using terrain. meaning you have greater yet decrease skill towers to furnish assurance. those towers happen to be below a prevalent arrival course to Dulles. Now you enable cellular telephones on airliners, so each time a 767 passes over head there are 200 human beings calling their trip domicile from the airport. This 200 telephones could ooverwhelm the skill of the cellular community below them, denying provider to the section that those towers have been designed - and sized - to provider.

Yes. I turned it on because I wanted to take a photo of a nice sunset outside my window. I didn't make a call or send a text message, though. Nothing bad happened...

ummm.. there isnt a tower to get reception up that high.... and all your phone does is constantly search for a signal which interferes with the instruments and kills your battery. Just turn it off and listen to the flight attendants. There are rules for a reason.

*The question asked was if we ever used our cellular phone onboard a plane, not if it's allowed. Reguardless, it is against US regulations.
Yes, I have used and left my phone on all the time on flights.
