Yes, they Volkwagens came from Germany originally. They stopped making them there but I also heard they may still produce them in Mexico.
Ferdinand Porsche, the same guy who made, well the Porsche, also designed the Volkswagon. They use the same basic type of engines, and some people will customize their VW by replacing the stock engine with a Porsche one for racing.
His idea was for a cheap car that would cost about the same as a motorcycle that could fit a family and go about 60 mph.
Hitler also wanted a cheap car. They got together in 1933 and began mass producing them a few years later.
The Volkswagon were so reliable that a military model was made and they were considered the "jeep" of the German army during WW2.
Volkswagons are unique in that they had air cooled engines that were located in the back of the car and not the front. The engine was kept cool by, well, air being blown through it.
So the rumors of older VW's overheating is kind of true, only because it holds less oil because of it's insistence on air cooling. Just don't drive so fast and the engine is fine. If it does overheat, the oil gets burned up real quick and the engine will seize if you don't put more oil in.
Volkswagons are also called "Bugs" or "Beetles" because of their round shape.

Volkswagen is a German manufacturer who, in recent times, has acquired Skoda and Seat. Until recently the old Beetle and Type 4 Transporter were being made in Brazil.
A volkswagen bought today will have parts from their factories all over the World, including Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Spain, Belgium South Africa and Brazil.
Assembly of the Polo is generally in the Skoda factory in Czech republic. Most VW, Seat and Skoda share the same floor so economically it makes sense to assemble those vehicles in the same factory.

They make Bentleys in the UK, Lamborghinis in Italy, Audis in Hungary also.
