yes , I'm a recovering addict, an dam proud of it and not ashamed to let anyone know that asks, because it is a hard road to recovery when i have been one for 35 years, and have been clean for 3 ,years and 8 months , but anyone that has one day clean is just as important as someone who has 20 years because we are only one step from relapse ,that's why we all take it a day at a time , im proud of my sisters and brothers from another mother. I'm a former alcoholic, haven't had a drink for over six years. I do not still call myself an alcoholic, that's giving alcohol a power over me that it does not have.

I found AA beyond useless, it held me back for years. They convinced me I was powerless over alcohol and that only God could relieve my obsession with alcohol. When that didn't happen, I felt I had to drink, I was powerless after all.

I quit by getting help for the depression that always caused me to return to drinking. I stayed sober mostly though self-realization and online support. EMpowerment, not powerlessness. One thing that did help was finding out that I was not alone, many people did not find help with AA, it is not the only way, and in fact, only about 5% of those who try AA find it helpful.

If you feel you need a method or group outside yourself:

Rational Recovery:
http://www.rational.org/
(RR does not have groups, it is a method for individuals. Also see Trimpey's books "Rational Recovery" and/or "The Small Book".)

SOS:
http://www.sossobriety.org/

SMART:
http://www.smartrecovery.org/
(Both SOS and SMART have some face-to-face groups and excellent online support)

I STAY sober because I have set up my life in a way where drinking doesn't have a part. I'm married to a non-drinker, part of my job is being an example of someone who has quit.

Yes I go to N/A. Narcotics Anonymous. Yes it works for me. The only requirement for membership is the desire to stop using. AA is a good program too. I just choose NA. Im a revovering addict, I'm a X I.V user. Addicted to Oxycontin, Benzo's, Alcohol, just about anything. The program works if you work it. Go to. www.na.org or www.narcoticsanonymous.org Then search your city, and state. There will be a place you can down load meetings in your area.
Good luck

Chuckler,
The incidence of Alcohol and drug abuse is so high in our culture that there have to be a lot of Alcoholics and drug users here today. I have benefited from a group like AA called EA for emotions anonymous.
The only person who can benefit from a 12 step group is a person who is honest with themselves. One problem it's helped me with is a faulty desire to justice get served in all sorts of human transactions. The 12 steps have helped me be more content with unresolved problems.
I don't presently attend meetings. Meetings, sincere interaction with other attendees and guided self examination have helped me.

I got just a few words of you Don't Trust A Church To Help You. I got more grief and mental anxiety when a Church pointed out my short coming. They were quick to say that I have a drinking problem but were not equipped or willing to follow up with support and accountability. Find some of your friends that will encourage you and make you accountable to them for your drinking. You really need to remember that you are doing this for yourself and no one else. That is the only way you will succeed. Good Luck !
