They're referring to Alum powder (aluminum sulfate), found amongst spices at most grocery stores. It helps maintain crispness in the canning of pickles.

Alum can be any of several substances. But in pickling it is used to make dill or sour pickles" puckery " . It is used for many other purposes like reducing cloudiness in tap water.
Sould be with canning and pickling supplies or with spices.

You'll find it in the spice aisle. It is a preservative and it helps keep the 'crispy" in the pickles.

Aluminum? Never heard of canned pickles. Always heard pickle jar or jarred pickles.. I think your doing it wrong...
