First of all, go by the expiry date. I would not want to chance it, because expired milk would not be a good thing to drink. Did you notice a funky odor? Does it look chunky? Throw it out!

I have had milk in an open 1/2 gallon container stay good for at least 10 days after the "for sell by" date on the container. Then it was used up, so I don't know how long it would have remained good!
Here is a question from the Dairy Council of California site:
Q. Can I drink milk after the printed date on the carton?
A. The shelf life of milk is affected by several factors including how it is handled before and after it is purchased. When stored at 40 degrees Fahrenheit and not left out of the refrigerator for extended time periods, milk should last approximately 5-7 days past the "sell by" date.

The date is a sell by date and milk is supposed to last seven days after. However it will only last if it has been kept cold the entire time. Sometimes the store gets its delivery and the pallets of milk don't make it into the dairy box for an hour or so. That really cuts down on the shelf life. Drink it until it smells bad. Always look for milk with the farthest away date.

I've been told no long than 4-5 days. I also read that you can pour fresh milk into chilled milk just be sure that you allow the child to drink it first before the full bottle of fresh milk. Also, do NOT pour fresh milk into frozen milk. You can keep it in the freezer for 3-4 months or so

You will likely get answers in the range of 3 days to a week. DO NOT pour fresh milk in with chilled milk. What makes breast milk go bad is basically bacteria. Everywhere in and on your body is bacteria. In small quanities, they are not a problem. But this bacteria is in breast milk and it will feed and grow off the nutrients in breast milk. So the idea is that you want to use the milk before the bacteria gets too numerous. Because the growth rate has so many variables, every source states a different "safe" time period for breast milk at room temp v. frige v. freezer. The reason breast milk will last longer in the frige than at room temperature is because the bacteria will grow much slower in cold temperatures. If you pour warm milk in will chilled milk, you will basically reactivate much of the bacteria in the chilled milk. If you want to combine freash milk with chilled milk, you should 1st chill the freash milk and the combine them. But of course that means you should thrown the whole thing out when "safe" period of the oldest milk has passed.

I was told by a grocer that the expiration date is the day it is to be sold by. It should be good for at least one week from this date. It really depends on the temperature you keep it and how often you take it out, on how long it lasts. You can also freeze milk if it is not opened and it will keep up to a month, just thaw in the frig.

Did you know you can freeze milk. A friend of mine used to do it and had no problem using it when defrosted. It did not affect the taste. She then kept them in the fridge for a week or so until used up.

I get wigged out after about 2-3 days after expiration date.
I would think an unopened carton may last 4-6 days because of the seal on it.
