I think it depends on the individual. Education and exposure to new things will stimulate thinking as never before. Writing ability, though a good indicator, does not necessarily mean that someone lacks the ability of deep thought.

There are many who express themselves well when they speak, but write very poorly.

A person isn't ignorant or uneducated just because they don't write in a manner that's considered proper. They also don't necessarily think the way they write. Grammar rules and such change from time to time. Also, some people may have motor function impairment or neurological problems that prevent them from writing properly. My son has a neurological problem that's related to autism and he can't get the thoughts in his head onto paper the same way as everybody else, even though he is more intelligent and creative than some people I've met.

One can have a great deal of native intelligence without the advantage of a disciplined education. Writing ability is not an entirely reliable indicator of thought capacity. It does indicate a measure of exposure to ideas concerning sentence structure, grammar and composition, but being trained to think can only take a mediocre mind so far. The brilliant mind, which could have benefited from a better education, is nevertheless known to be able to overcome such disadvantages.

Most people who struggle w/ words & writing are usually extremely better @ another subject, such as math or something more logical. Some of the brightest people I know cannot spell or word things worth crap, whereas I cannot do simple addition in my head-I have to count on my fingers! Not to insinuate that I myself am bright; just stronger in that area than some.So yeah, I believe one can think just fine if one cannot write properly & I also think that people simply don't take the time to type things out correctly, a pet peeve for some...

Not everyone has the ability to write well or to express themselves well by using the written word.

It would be a mistake to assume that because someone does not write well, they are not intelligent or good thinkers.

Many successful people are not particularly literate, particularly if they come from an older generation or a place where literacy is not highly valued.

Cheers :-)

Yes, he can think. I think that has more to do with the amount of attention he is paying at the time and the level of concentration he feels whatever he's writing deserves.

This is a prominent cultural belief in the United States, but it's not actually true. Surely you know people who are very intelligent but don't speak or write much. In Japan, for example, a person is considered more intelligent if he/she doesn't speak much.
