I think our old man of about 10 has had a stroke, one side of his body does not appear to be working, he cannot get off the bottom of the cage, and is making a lot of noise.
Is this a trip to the vets to get him put to sleep? Or will he recover?

We took him to the Vet and he had indeed had a stroke, so we had him put to sleep.
Thanks everyone for your replies.

10 is quite old for a budgie & it does sound like a stroke, maybe the kinda thing to do is to have him sleep.

The lifespan of a budgie (parakeet) is 15 to 20 years if you feed them properly - i.e. more than just seeds. If he is not able to move one side and is at the bottom of the cage making alot of noise take him to the vet. He might be ready to be put to sleep OR he just might be injured and the vet can help. Either way take him to a vet to find out.

If it stays on the bottom of the cage it will get a chill and die any ways, it is best to take it to the vets, but dont get your hopes up, the vets might be able to make it better, but i wish you all the luck

I had budgies for many years and my father and granda b4 him. I think 10 is a great age for a budgie but id definately take him to vet doesnt sound very good im afraid pershaps time to say goodbye? My oldest one was 8 and when this happened to him my dad gave him a teeny bit of whiskey on his beak and he picked only to die a few days later. its not easy to let them go sorry

10 IS ABOUT ALL THAT A BUDGIE LIVES,SOMETIMES 15. MINE DIED AT 10 YEARS. MADE A LOUD NOISE AND DROPPED IN THE BOTTOM OF CAGE. THINK HE HAD A STROKE TOO,OR A HEART ATTACK. I WOULD JUST SAY BYE BYE,I NO IT WILL BE HARD,BUT HES GOING TO DIE ANYWAY.

i think only a vet can give the right advise n if you love your little feathered friends i recon you should go n see him. i made a mistake with one i used to keep. i used to let him fly around the living room, till i found out he had been eating the surrounds of my picture frames, they where lead, so he didn't last long after that.
hope yours gets better. send him a chirp from me!

i doubt he will recover. if you will feel better giving him a few hours longer then you can but you risk prolonging his suffering.

i think the vets the kindest thing to do
