Please take no notice of Macgor's implication that you are prejudiced against severe autism.
I've both lived with and taught profoundly autistic young adults for over 7 years. They self-harm constantly, some kill themselves because of the agony in their minds. This is not 'Rainman', this is not Asperger's, this is severe, as you mentioned. Many Christians here are (what is new) arguing from ignorance.
The people I work with do not have a concept of 'I', or 'you', they often cannot do anything for themselves and life is one constant struggle of often terrifying mental disturbance. It takes a staff of 8 to look after 4 of these children, 24/7.
When you've seen a child pull her own eye out and destroy it, you would question the very same patronizing Christian dogma that this is all designed by a supernatural Daddy.
We love these children, but they cannot 'love'. They cannot identify any concept of 'I', 'me' or 'you'. So, Macgor, above, you have it so backwards that you don't know which way you are facing.

Before I start, please excuse the person who said autism is a form of mental retardation -- while it is true that many autistic people are retarded, there are also many who are not. Even the severely autistic may not be retarded, yet a mildly autistic person may be very retarded.
Schizophrenics are often prone to the most bizarre delusions and hallucinations, but in order to even be capable of delusions and hallucinations you need a very powerful imagination..... In a sense, it is like the brain's ability to deal with the power of its own imagination goes awry in their case, for reasons that basically involve brain chemistry.... Reason is impaired and the sufferer begins to believe all sorts of nonsense, and it can become disturbing, even dangerous because they may act on it too.... But if they learn to control it with the right treatments and therapy, then perhaps they will learn to hone their gift for fanciful thinking! And perhaps, instead of the auditory hallucinations many of them are prone to, they will instead attune to "listening" to the voice of wisdom or the Spirit or something.....
Also, both conditions you named have one thing in common: in both cases the person is usually markedly withdrawn. The autistic person is withdrawn when it comes to communication and social interaction, the schizophrenic when it comes to reality and the self (which, incidentally, is more painful and potentially dangerous -- most schizophrenics HATE the way they feel, unlike autistic people who are often quite content to be the way they are, even if YOU don't like it). In fact, while this may sound radical to you, there is nothing wrong with autism in itself. It is only a problem if the autistic person is also retarded. Otherwise they need not be coaxed or coerced into speaking or interacting with others. Let them be their seemingly remote, silent selves. Their lack of a natural inclination toward communication may spell problems for them later in life because it will be hard for them to do things like shopping or ordering a pizza or whatever, but if you're a true friend to them you won't mind doing most of that for them, and as for their occupations they are often quite gifted and could turn out to be dedicated architects or computer programmers or whatever anyway because their mostly silent exteriors often mask incredible brilliance. Many also have a heightened sensitivity to certain sounds, textures, colours, etc. Just try to keep them happy and keep them occupied. They won't thank you for it on the outside, but you can rest assured they will appreciate it deep down.
And so the "purpose" of such conditions is to show that such people are often much, much more than appearances would have you believe, and that we should help them where necessary without forcing them to conform completely.

Each one of us has things wrong with us. Some of those things are really evident in some people, such as those who are schizophrenic, or those born missing limbs or things like that. The rest of us have things wrong with us that are not so noticeable. I have always had problems with my bowels. I've had psychological problems. I have had mild heart problems and thngs like that. I am sure that there are more things wrong with me that have not yet surfaced becasue they have not caused noticeable effects. To look at me you would never know these things. They are all due to the fact that this is an imperfect world. This is not the way it was supposed to be. God does not "do things to people" to give them these problems. The problems are due to the imperfections of the world and those imperfections are due to the fact that our ancestors chose to disobey God. When that happen the world changed from perfection, as God had originally created it, to imperfection, where there is pain and suffering and illness.
God can use all these imperfections and problems to our good and to his purposes because he is a great and wonderful God who has infinite wisdom and power, but he does not purposely inflict them on people. He certainly does not STOP them from happening, and that's because he cannot intervene in this world the way you or I would really like him to intervene. He has rules that he's already laid down. Just like he cannot repeal the law of gravity, he cannot break those rules. He is limited by his own power and authority. What he has created he cannot uncreate. He will destroy this world in the long run because it is imperfect, but he will first save all those who will turn to him because he loves us all and wants none of us to perish.

People aren't created and autism and schizophrenia are diseases of the brain that developed through genetics flaws.

Schizophrenia is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Autism is a form of mental retardation. What do u mean what is the purpose? That is the way these people were created and there is no rhym or reason for it. God made them to. Just like he made handicapped people, people who are blind, deaf, retarded. People who are gay, straight, black, white and so on are all Gods creations and we need to love everyone and accept the fact that people are made differently. End of story.

IF there was a reason these poor people were put on the Earth, perhaps it was to allow those around them to show the utmost compassion, help and understanding. Those who would turn away from the vulnerable and defensless, or worse... show them contempt and disdain, are those who might think twice about feeling smug about being religious.

WIthout the schizos who would talk to the burning bushes? Without the autistic, who would the Televangelists smack in the head? I mean, come on, would any normal person let one of those guys hit you in the forehead? I'd hit 'em back, personally, but Rainman is just gonna giggle about it and fart, then jump around like a 5 yr old with a new bike at christmas.

God knows best. And he has as much mercy on them as he does on me and you. God tests us all with difficulties and hardships. Some of us get more of it, some less. It is our job to treat such people with Love and Care, God has wisdom and knows best why each of us are tested with whatever test he throws our way. Why do Children suffer ? I could never know but I know that God has mercy over all his creation and therefore I as a human also have an obligation to treat all God's creation with love and mercy, esp the weak of them (children, the ill etc etc)

I think I understand what you are asking but it implies you have a prejudice against mental illness.
If God created us all equal then God's concept of what is good is not based on temporal values or perceptions.
Who am I to determine why any of us is different than any other?
And isn't there something about how we judge (who we perceive) the least? Again, it is not my place, nor any human's place to judge anything in the sight of God.
Perhaps the purpose you seek is to teach you tolerance and understanding.
In my humble opinion, it is those who cannot love others (one of the two new commandments in the New Testament) who are handicapped by their blindness to the real Glory.

These are caused by a chemical imbalance of the brain. God gave humans the ability to create medications and to become Dr.'s to help these people. My Physician is a Christian who gives out Bibles. Jesus himself healed many who were afflicted by mental illnesses. We are to love one another and not to pity, or judge them.
