The truth is, we get a portion of the delivery charge. It's about half of it. It almost pays for gas at the price gas is running these days; it does not pay for oil and tires, or the danger we're in, frankly. (Pizza drivers are in the top 10 most dangerous professions.) The store keeps the other half. Is this a matter of education, or is it a way for people to absolve themselves from tipping us for good service?

Some people just want to get by as cheaply as possible, period. I think everyone should be required to work in a service occupation for at least six months, maybe even a year. We'd have people who had much better attitudes towards clerks, delivery people, and waitresses and waiters.

I always tip at least 15% unless I get abominable service. If I get really good service, I'll tip from 25% on up, depending on the place, etc.

I deliver pizza and the company that I work for charges a 2 dollar fee. I only get one of those dollars and yet gas is almost 3 dollars a gallon. I beleive that it is a combination of things. One, it really depends on the economic status of the residents of your delivery area. Two, I beleive that people want absolution for being cheap and Three, not knowing that the driver gets only a small portion of the fee.

As long as I got good delivery service in a timely manner (per what I was told on the phone), I always gave a minimum $5 tip since I was always ordering at least two pizzas and spuds.

I work for one of the biggest chains. Our store has a $.50 delivery charge, which goes directly to us, in addition to a "bonus" delivery charge we get as long as we use car signs and keep our uniforms in order, etc. The bonus scales with gas costs, but generally it's around $1.25 straight per a delivery. Then again, we make less hourly than some other local pizza places.

Truth is, it varies from store to store, from chain to chain.
