How do I turn Oxycodone 80mg extended release into 5mg or 10mg. Can I cut it. Some people say yes and some say no. I'm cannot go into why I need them cut but I will say that I do have a prescription for all three doses. Thank you so much everyone.

Was asking for a family member because they don't like going on here.....Too many people trying to play god thinking they know everything and criticizing instead of answering the question so I asked for them. I sure know what they mean.

I work for a Pain Management Specialist and you NEVER cut or crush and extended release medication. Extended release medications are made to work over an "extended" period of time. The other medications are short acting medications which are only used for break through pain. They are not made to be used the same way and do not produce the same effects. When you say that you have a prescription for all three dosages are you stating that you have to take 80mg ER and 5 of 10mg for break through pain? If you really are not prescribed these medications and you are using them in a way that is not prescribed by your doctor or you are letting someone else use them you are risking serious medical implications not to mention that it is illegal. Either way please do not cut the Oxycodone ER.

I cant figure out any reason to cut a prescribed medication that isn't somewhat illegal. If you have a prescription for all 3 dosages then there really isn't a reason to cut any of them.

that being said. The manufacture process is different between the 80mg tabs and the 5/10mg tabs. If you cut the 80 mg tabs into 8 parts thereby having 8x10 mg tabs all you will end up with is 8 10mg slow release tabs. The same goes with the 5mg tabs. The 80mg tabs/slow release are for maintaining a level of the pain in a chronic situation and the 5/10mg are for spikes in pain. Overall Oxycodone is a scary drug. If you need to do all this figuring you need to talk to the Dr. that gave you the prescriptions.

and.... somebody needs to talk to that doctor also.

No you can't cut it to reduce the strength. The time release component is mixed throughout the medication. If you need a lower dose just ask your doctor or just fill the Rx for the lower dosages. Three prescriptions for the same drug? From the same doctor?

I am on Oxicodone 20mg extended release,my husband has been on ms cotin for 3 yrs.and NO YOU DO NOT CUT THESE PILL AT ALL.You can cut Percocet or vicodin.Any one on yahoo answers tells you that you can cut them knows nothing about these drugs,so do not listen to them. If you are trying to lower your dose of Oxicodone you must do it gradually by getting a script for a lower dose and work from their. Then you can take 5-10 mg of percocets for breakthru pain. Also only junkies cut these pills too shoot up in their arm or snort.

You cannot cut oxy 80's as they are time release and you will negate the time release and get the full dose at one time. If they are too strong then why not get a lower dose, if they are all prescribed to you. By the way do you know that it is against the law to see more than 1 pain doc? If you get caught they will flag your name at the pharmacy and all pain docs. Be careful.

Yes you can cut it. Go buy a pill cutter. Getting it to even 10mg doses is going to be hard, seeing as how small the OC 80's are in the first place. And yes it will release MORE than the norm quicker than it should. But we're here to answer questions, not judge them.

These are all time release and some kids are chopping them up to get a rush but, this isn't really smart, your on you way into becoming an addict. If you have scripts for the smaller doses, get them.

two words stand out to me, EXTENDED RELEASE, you should never cut, crush, or open extended release pills. you may get too much of the med all at one time, instead of lasting awhile, like they are meant to do. your MD should perscribe the exact dose, talk to your MD.

You DON,T! The 80 mg. /10 mg oxy contin is time releasded ,contin is short for (continuous )release over a 12 hr period. If you cut ,crush ect. you will release all 12 hrs in under 4 hrs. and this is how over 1100 kids O-D ed last yr. alone! the 5 mg. is ment for break through pain , it is a fast release form of oxy. I strongly recomend you ask your Dr to switch you to M.S. Contin and get off the oxys NOW! Then go to www.classaction.com and join the law suit against the maker of Oxy contin. ?s Email me.smangert@pctcnet.net,unless your my junky sister in law!
